3 Ways to Beat Insomnia

Insomnia affects a lot of people. Fortunately most people don’t actually have clinical insomnia, but rather just need to change their habits a little so they can sleep more soundly. There are ways to fall asleep easily without the need for dangerous drugs. Here are the three best ways to do so.

Maintain a Routine

Most people sleep as long as they possibly can. So that means during the week they get up at one time, and on the weekends they sleep in later. It is nice to be able to sleep late every now and then, but in order to make sure that you are able to fall asleep as quick as possible a routine is needed.

Try to schedule your days so that you are waking up at the same time every morning, and you are going to sleep at the same time every night. This will help your body to adjust to the schedule you have set for it.

But that’s not all that needs a routine. You should have a routine as to how you use the rooms in your house. The living room should be used for most of your daily activities. The bedroom should be used for sleeping and changing clothes. This will condition your brain to associate the bedroom with sleeping.

Exercise Daily

Exercise is the best medicine that you can find. By getting up and moving around, even just a little bit, you will help to wear yourself out. By using up all of your energy, you will better be able to fall asleep when the time comes.

Exercise doesn’t need to be at the gym for hours on end. In fact, you can do all of your daily exercise in your spare time. After you eat breakfast in the morning, walk up and down the stairs 4 or 5 times. When you get to work, do the same thing. On your lunch break, take a walk down the block and buy a healthy lunch. After you eat your dinner in the evening, go for a bike ride. By staying active you help to keep your body from becoming complacent and causing you to stay up late.

Keep Your Diet Under Control

By eating healthy foods, you will not only be healthier, but you will also help your body sleep. There are some foods that will make it harder for you to fall asleep. These should be avoided in the evening.

Heavy and greasy foods, like fried foods, will keep you awake at night. Caffeine will also make you stay awake, even if it doesn’t seem to make you less tired. Even some foods that seem innocent, like aged cheeses and garlic, can keep you awake.

Try to keep your dinners light, and skip the late night snacks. Instead, if you feel hungry before bed, have a glass of warm milk. If you don’t like it warm, cold milk is fine too, but it makes your body work harder to bring it up to temperature.

Insomnia, or more accurately difficulty falling asleep, is a largely self-made problem. By taking these key points into account you can help yourself fall asleep quickly and easily.
