Acne is a skin condition that leads to the formation of red inflamed growths on the skin. Sometimes even whiteheads, blackheads and cysts form on a person’s skin. Acne usually occurs when the skin’s pores get clogged or blocked. This leads to what we know as pimples. On every pore of the skin, there is an oil and hair gland. Excess production of oil by these glands blocks the pores. This makes dirt and bacteria to accumulate. The accumulated material is what we see as whiteheads or blackheads, depending on its coloration. If inflammation is much deeper in the skin, pimples grow larger and cysts occur.

Many remedies have been manufactured to combat the causes and effects of acne. However, it is imperative to categorize acne in terms of skin type, extent or spread of acne, gender of the affected person, skin sensitivity, and maturity of the skin.

For dry skin, it is characterized by irritation, sometimes even in the absence of acne. For this type of skin, acne can be treated using home remedies. The simplest remedy is ensuring adequate intake of water daily. This keeps the skin moisturized throughout and gives it a glowing quality. One can also apply drying agents on the affected part of the skin, e.g. use of toothpaste, methylated spirit or bar soap. Many skin care products minimize extra large skin pores. For mature skin, they clear breakouts and reinvigorate the skin, giving it a youthful flourish.

Oily skin is at a bigger risk of being affected by acne than dry skin. This is because oil attracts more dirt onto the skin. Body oil also clogs the skin pores. Home remedies for acne include use of cosmetic ointments. However, these have to be carefully analyzed for any side effects. Turmeric is a brilliant antiseptic and when mixed with gram flour and some curd, it provides a good home care skin remedy. Applying this mixture daily removes acne. Another home remedy is aloe Vera. Commercial products for treating oily skin include Zenmed Acne Therapy for Oily Skin, Exposed Skin Care Basic 5-Piece Kitand ClearPores 3-step Acne Facial System. They detoxify the skin from the inside. People who suffer from excess grease on their skin are advised to apply the above products, especially teenagers. These products are used for both treatment and prevention of acne while at the same time not drying out the skin. The common baseline is the use of a balancing act between alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, iron-rich clay, regular moisturizers and cleansers.
