The After Earth soundtrack features a score by James Newton Howard. Howard has received eight nominations from the Academy Awards for his film composition work. This alone speaks of the quality of his work. His most famous works are the scores for the films King Kong, The Fugitive, The Dark Knight, The Hunger Games, and The Bourne Legacy.
It’s not surprising that Howard scored After Earth. After all, he wrote the music for all of Shyamalan’s films since the horror hit The Sixth Sense.
About The Movie: After Earth (formerly titled One Thousand A.E. or 1000 A.E.) is a futuristic science-fiction film with Will Smith and his son Jaden in the lead roles. They play a father-and-son team in the film. The events in the picture occur a thousand years after humanity left planet earth for good after cataclysmic circumstances. Earth has become a no man’s land. Mankind now lives in a new planet called Nova Prime.
General Cypher Raige (Smith) returns home from a tour of duty, ready to be a father to Kitai (Jaden), his thirteen year old son. While traveling through space, the two of them crash lands in a hostile and dangerous planet – Earth. Injured and dying, there is nothing that Cypher can do to save himself and his son. Thus, his son Kitai must journey across the hostile Earth environment and go search for the rescue beacon which is going to be their ticket to escape Earth and return back home to Nova Prime.
M. Night Shyamalan (The Village, The Sixth Sense, Signs) directed the film from a story and script by Gary Whitta and Stephen Gaghan. Joining Smith and his son Jaden in the cast are Kristofer Hivju, Isabelle Fuhrman, and Sophie Okonedo.
The first trailer for After Earth showed the father and son characters played by Will Smith and his son Jaden crash-landing and being stranded in a now uninhabitable planet Earth. The trailer features a voice-over that goes: ‘Crash landed. Son, this is not training. This is a class 1 quarantined planet. The threats we will be facing are real. Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans. Every single decision we make will be life or death. But if we are going to survive this, you must realize that fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Now, do not misunderstand real. Danger is very real but fear is a choice. Do you know where we are? No sir. This is Earth.’
