Antipolo Type Toilet

The Antipolo type toilet is a product of the United States’ stay in the Philippine Islands during the first decades of the twentieth century. It is a closed pit toilet that does not make use of water. Human waste goes straight to the pit thus there is no need for flushing or anything. This type of toilet was deemed ideal when it was first used in the Philippines given the circumstances like lack of water. The toilet was named after the city of Antipolo where the toilets were first constructed by American public health officials. Antipolo is a city in the province of Rizal. The city is very near Metro Manila.

The Antipolo type toilet features a pit that is at least four feet in depth. How wide it is depends on the preferences of the builder as well as the location of the pit. If the pit is built on a small lot, naturally, the width of the pit will be smaller as well. It’s on a case to case basis. The pit is covered with a platform that could be made of wood, logs or concrete. This platform has a hole in it with a seat cover or lid which closes the hole when the toilet is not in use. A huge pipe runs from the toilet seat, through the hole and down to the pit. In some variations of the toilet, there is no toilet seat, just a hole in the platform with a cover.

The toilet also features a vent pipe that should run from the pit up to a few feet above the roof of the toilet. This is to ensure that the bad smell doesn’t linger inside the toilet or around it. This vent pipe allows gas from the pit to escape. Because of this vent pipe feature, it’s best that an Antipolo type toilet be built as far away from your house as possible. The platform as well as the pit itself should also have a lining of some sort to prevent the platform or the sides of the pit from collapsing. The farther the pit is from your house, the safer you are from germs that flies from the pit may carry.

This type of toilet has several advantages if we are talking about building toilets in areas where there is very limited to little water. It’s very practical and it can be installed very easily. It does not also require a sewage line.

An Antipolo type toilet is also a good alternative if you are looking to build a temporary toilet.
