Are breast implants safe?

breast implantsEver since the first breast augmentation procedure, people have wondered whether or not implants were safe for use. As a matter of fact, breast implants are the most studied cosmetic surgery procedure to date. A comprehensive report showed that over 3,200 separate studies for implants had been conducted by 1999. The fact that these procedures are still performed legally and safely all over the world goes to show just how safe getting breast implants really is. Many rumors have been spread, such as breast implants affecting a woman’s ability to become pregnant, or for a woman to breast feed, however these were all proven false.

Different types of implants

Although most implants fall into two categories, saline and silicone, the differences within these categories can be drastic. For example, the viscosity of different silicone implants can cause a ruptured implant to either seep into the implant pocket, or the silicone could hold its shape for months on end. Of course this is just one example of how various implants can differ. This is why it’s important that you do your research before deciding what implant material you want to go with.

Saline implants

Saline implants are implants that contain a sterile, salty solution within the silicone shell. Saline implants are slightly more advantageous than silicone implants, only in the rare case of an implant rupturing. Since saline implants are filled with salt water, there is no chance of an allergic reaction, cancer, or any other negative outcome. The saline water simply gets absorbed by your body and drained out through natural processes. The silicone shell must be surgically removed, and if the patient wishes, can be replaced at the same time.

Silicone implants

Silicone implants are filled with a sticky gel that makes a much more natural look and feel to the breast. Due to these reasons, most woman prefer having a silicone implant rather than a saline implant. If a silicone implant ruptures, the fibrous tissue that forms around the implant generally holds the gel in place. This may sometimes cause the patient to not even notice a ruptured implant. Usually, an MRI is necessary to notice ruptures of silicone implants. Studies have shown that leaking silicone gel does not cause any long-term health problems. As a matter of fact, all of the many studies have not been able to link reproductive problems, tissue disease, cancer, or any other medical complication to leaking implants. Even though a ruptured implant might not lose its size, it can eventually cause breast pain and sometimes even change the shape or contour of the implant.

It is safe to say that breast implants are a very safe and effective procedure. The type of implant you get, what size you should get, and many other details can be discussed with you and a qualified surgeon. Contact your local cosmetic or plastic surgeon today for more information!
