Housewarming party

Have you ever attended a housewarming party? When you attend one, do you bring a gift?
In a proper housewarming party, the host or the owner used to receive gifts from the guests and the gifts will be around wine and cheese baskets, household items, paintings, glass wares etc. This time, I’d like to share our Asian housewarming gift ideas.

Asian Housewarming Gifts Ideas

1. Indonesia

I’m from Indonesia, so the closest housewarming party I know well is from my own country. Indonesian people used to have a nice housewarming party but you’re not obligated to bring gifts.

The owner will be happy just to have you come. Indonesian used to have a simple prayer lead by the owner or the invited religion leader. Indonesian Christian used to hold a simple service with praise, pray and worship. The Pastor will bless the house with Holy Anointing oil and lead the prayers. After that, we can just eat and have fun. The owner used to prepare all the meals and drinks.

2. Korea

Korean housewarming party is called Jipdeuri and usually held by the newly weds to start their new life. All the foods will be prepared by the host. It also to show off the new wife cooking skill and it’s a bit scary for the new couple. You can bring toilet papers and detergents as gifts. It’s okay, it’s Korean tradition but I think they would say no to wine and cheese basket gift.

3. Japan

I think Japanese people are really serious about gifts. When, what kind of gifts, for whom, the way you wrap it, and the meaning of gifts are really important for them.
So, for the housewarming party, I think it will be okay if you bring wine or traditional ‘Sake’, Coffee or tea packages, or even Japanese ‘Bonsai’. Remember, avoid bringing gifts in certain number like four or nine. I’m not sure about number nine, but four is represent death in East Asia tradition.

4. China

Chinese housewarming party is almost the same with others but you have to consider the gifts carefully. Chinese people have many taboo items. Don’t bring something sharp like knives or scissors as housewarming gifts and not in certain number four. I think money, wine and candle will be a safe choice.

5. India

Indian housewarming gifts are more simple. Religious accessories, books, paintings, and good quality household items will make a great gift.

I hope the lists above may help you to choose gifts for housewarming party, specially if you have invited by Asian friends.
