Bargain Candy You Ate As A Kid

Do you remember the candy you ate as a kid like Wax Lips, Candy Buttons, Wax Bottles, Candy Cigarettes and other candies from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.Some of it is still around and you can still buy it depending on your age. But some others have long been gone or taken off the market through no reason other than it just isn’t popular anymore.

Let’s take a look back and see what candy was popular in the decades past.

1920’s and before there was

  • Beemans and Black Jack chewing gum
  • Animal Crackers
  • Buttermints
  • Spearmint
  • Candy canes
  • Candy corn
  • Anise candy drops
  • cinnamon candy drops

Do you remember horehound candy? Those drops were supposed to help sooth your throat. I still see them today in certain pharmacy’s around the area.

In the 20’s and 30’s there were BB Bats. These were taffy pops and had flavors of banana, strawberry, chocolate and peanut butter. Bit O honey and Black Cows were introduced in this era. The later was a slow poke dipped in a chocolate covering. If you don’t know what a slow poke is, it’s basically caramel suckers. They were the best cent candy because they would last all day.

The 30’s had Big Cherry which is a mound of milk chocolate sprinkled with peanuts that contains a whole cherry in a rich creamy center. Today we call them Chocolate covered cherries!

Ahhh, those crazy 1940’s were when the bubble gum cigar became popular. So did candy cigarettes and bazooka bubble gum. Dots and smarties and jelly rings were the penny candy of this era.

The Fifties and Sixties brought us more than Rock N Roll. Do you remember candy you ate as a kid? Was it any of these:

  • Turkish Taffy
  • Fireballs
  • Beer nuts
  • Black Jack taffy
  • Bubble gum cigarettes
  • candy necklace
  • Astro Pops
  • Banana Splits
  • Cherry Sours
  • Chicklets
  • Fruit Stripe Gum

Those 50’s & 60’s were wild! They came up with some pretty bizarre candies. But along came the 1970’s. The classic rock era had Blow Pops and Appleheads, small candies that tasted like apples. There was candy charm bracelets and Gobstoppers. Smiley face gumballs and grapeheads and poprocks. Sounds like some fun candies!

The 80’s had some interesting candies as well. Do you remember:

  • Bananarama
  • Big League Chew
  • Bubble Tape
  • Cowtails
  • Crybaby’s
  • Nerds
  • Gummy Bears
  • Runts
  • Skittles
  • Sour Patch Kids

Into the 90’s were Warheads and Sour Punch and gummi cola bottles and gummi hot dogs. Bubbaloo liquid filled cherry gum became really popular.
