Real-life specialist Dr. Sylvie de Souza manages to look smashing—even after one of her marathon twelve-hour shifts. Jacqui Stafford finds out how she does it…

Assistant chairman in the Emergency department at the Brooklyn Hospital Centre, Fort Green, Dr. Sylvie de Souza is still gorgeous after a long night’s work. “Just because you’re a doctor doesn’t mean you have to look like a nerd,” she says. “On the other hand, when you’re making life-and-death decisions, patients don’t want to be treated by someone with bright red lips and huge hair.”

When she finally does get home, it’s to a gregarious two-year-old son, so she’s fine-tuned her beauty routine for maximum speed and efficiency. “I apply a light, natural foundation in the morning, without powder or concealer and don’t reapply during the day, but I won’t leave the house without mascara,” she says. “I also can’t live without perfume, and carry it around absolutely everywhere.”

Once her shift is over, the vamp emerges. “At night, I like MAC Lipglass over a bright lipstick—generally red,” she says. “I’m not an eyeshadow person, but I use black eyeliner for dramatic eyes and a brown pencil to define my brows.”

How I unwind after a particularly stressful stint in the ER:

“I adore the body oil from the French company Monoi, which I buy in Paris, but if I’ve run out, then it’s Nivea Skin Therapy Creamy Conditioning Oil – Nivea products are all classics.”

Skincare:

“At the moment, I use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash every morning and Nivea Visage Anti-Wrinkle Q10 Night Care at night. Once a month, I mix my own natural clay face mask.”

Haircare:

“Kiehl’s shampoo and conditioner, and I carry the Crème with Silk Groom in my bag to smooth my dry hair.”
