Benefits of a Gluten Free Diet

Eating a gluten free diet can seem difficult or even expensive at first, but if you have a child suffering from autism, you suffer from a gluten allergy, or you or a family member suffers from celiac disease, eating a gluten free diet is critical to your health. A gluten free diet means not consuming gluten in any form during any meal. This typically means removing foods such as wheat, grains, oats, rye and barley completely from the diet. While it may seem highly improbable for you to remove all traces of gluten from your household, it can be easily accomplished, and tasty foods can still be prepared that will complement a gluten free diet.

Being Cautious on a Gluten Free Diet

First of all, you must be very cautious of every food product in your household, and begin to read all nutritional labels very carefully. Gluten can be found in everything from processed desserts to spices. The benefits of a gluten free diet can be everything from improved symptoms of celiac disease, to lessening the progression and degree of autism in children.

If you are considering eating a gluten free diet, your first step is to look for gluten free products at the health food store. It may take trial and error before you find things that you like, and learn which foods you completely dislike, because as with most health conscious diets, a gluten free diet food may taste disgusting or delicious. You can replace most products that are typically based on grain (bread, desserts, crusts, health bars) with gluten free versions. Furthermore, you can purchase gluten free raw materials and start crafting a delicious gluten free recipe in your kitchen. Gluten free cookies are a popular choice for first time cooking without gluten. They are simple to make, taste delicious, and only use ingredients that can be easily found in most grocery stores.

Replacing Foods on a Gluten Free Diet

You may be surprised to know that many of the products you will have to remove from your cabinets can be replaced with gluten free diet foods. Everything from pasta to macaroni, to even breadcrumbs can be found in many health food stores to complement traditional recipes in gluten free form.

The benefits of a gluten free diet are sometimes not seen immediately, since gluten can remain in your system for many months. It takes time and dedication to get gluten out of your body, so be prepared to stay on the gluten free diet for a while before you notice any results. Autistic children typically respond very well to a gluten free diet, and sometimes the improvements are immediately visible. However, other people eating a gluten free diet usually won’t give the diet a long enough period of time to work, and claim they didn’t see any benefits. Therefore, it may take anywhere from two to six months until improvements are noticed. During this time, stay away from all fast foods, artificial flavors, and processed foods to avoid eating anything which may inadvertently contain gluten.

Eliminating gluten intake is one of the best ways to improve your health if you have a gluten allergy, are autistic, or suffer from celiac disease. You can continue to eat meat, eggs, fruits, fish, vegetables and nuts on a gluten free diet, so really only grains are affected. The reason dairy is not mentioned is because many people also give up eating caseins, such as milk, yogurt and cheese to complement a gluten free diet. This is not necessarily required, but often results are attained much faster by giving up dairy as well. So stick to eating only gluten free foods, and you may notice a dramatic benefit in your health and the health of your loved ones.
