Best Care for Dentures

The best care for dentures is a must if you want them to look their best and last as long as possible. After all, dentures are costly and can be difficult to deal with, especially when it comes to repairs, replacement or making sure that they are securely in place. However, if you take the best care for dentures that you possibly can you most likely won’t have to worry so much. The two most important concerns are keeping dentures and mouth clean and secure. It sounds simple and it is, the only problem is that many denture wearers aren’t consistent with these two basic tasks.

When it comes to keeping dentures and mouth clean it’s similar to when you had your own teeth as far as brushing and using mouthwash. The only difference in brushing is that you use a soft bristle toothbrush made for dentures and brush 3 times a day when possible. If you have to miss a brushing chew gum designed for dentures such as Freedent. Rinsing the mouth with mouthwash or salt water after taking dentures out is a must to keep gums disease free. Food particles get under dentures and bacteria breeds quickly in this dark moist environment, so it is vital to take a minute to practice good oral hygiene.

Soak dentures in denture cleanser every night at room temperature. It is not good for dentures to be exposed to extreme temperatures of cold or hot or to allow them to dry out. Keeping dentures moist at all times will help keep them from warping and cracking prematurely.

It is also important to cut back or cut out drinks, foods or anything that will stain dentures such as coffee, tea, cokes, grape juice, red wine, red sauce and soy sauce, chocolate, cigarettes and berries. There are more, but these are the most common offenders.

Lastly, securing dentures can be a hassle when they don’t fit properly. There are all many types of adhesives and many of them are horrible, especially the ones in paste or cream form. A better option would be to use denture strips, wafers or cushion grip thermoplastic denture adhesive. If you know it will be a while before you can get dentures adjusted to fit properly you might want to consider the use of a soft denture reliner kit.

When you don’t take the best care for dentures that you possibly can they will not last as long nor look as good as you would like. As you can see it’s not hard, but it does take a little time and effort on your part to make it happen.
