Best Puppy Food

Puppies are joyful little bundles of joy that require the best puppy food in order to have the energy and nutrients necessary to grow and frolic.

Nutritional Requirements

Puppies are growing quickly. They gain roughly their birth weight every week when they are drinking milk. Puppies start on solid food at about six weeks old and should be fed three times a day. This can be cut down to twice a day at four or five months old. After eight months to a year old this is cut to once a day by some people while others maintain twice a day feeding.

Puppies need water, energy, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Energy and protein are especially important for growing animals since it will go into their body and muscles. Protein sources include meat. It is important what type of protein you feed your puppy because it has to be high quality and highly digestible in order to give the puppy what he or she needs. Vitamins and minerals are also important to keep everything working properly such as the immune system.

The exact amount of food that should be fed to a puppy depends on a number of factors including the puppy’s breed, size, age, activity levels, among other factors. The most important thing to remember is called body condition score.

Body Condition Score

Body condition score is basically how fat the dog is. The score is based on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is an emaciated or very skinny dog and 5 is an obese or very fat dog. You want a dog that is neither fat nor skinny. A score is assigned by both visually looking over the dog and also feeling the dog, especially over the ribs and along the spine. The dog should have a little bit of fat over the ribs and back, but the ribs should only be a faint outline. This can be hard to judge in puppies with a lot of fur.
