CHOOSING THE WOOD
The wooden material that you choose for making your bow should be flexible. Such woods are juniper and mulberry, but you can also use oak, teak, elm or hazel, depending on which is available at the moment. The building material should come from a dead, yet not rotting piece of wood. Its best if the original wood is the same height as the user, but it can also be efficient if its 1 meter (~1 yard) long. The thickness of the wood should not be less than 1 inch in diameter. Find a wood without knots, twists or limbs. In the absence of dry wood, green wood can be used, but have in mind that it doesnt provide the same power. If you use green wood, pine is best. Peel it, soak it in worm water and dry it over fire so it hardens.
MAKING THE BOW AND ARROWS
Every wood has a natural curve, so determine the woods natural curve before you start carving. The bow should be thicker in the center in order to be strong. The thicker side of the wood should be the inside of the bow the side that bends towards you when shooting. Start carving with knife or other tool until it has same width in both the thicker and the thinner half. In the end, the bow should have thick and strong center and two thinner, easily bendable parts on both sides of the centre. Cut notches with your knife on both of the ends on the outside of the curve, each 1 2 inches from the end of the bow, shaped like half-moon.
The string can be made from nylon cord, hemp rope, fishing line or cotton threads. If you find yourself out in the wild, it may be hard to find a good string so you will have to try different materials. The string should not be too stretched because the power comes from the bow.
Arrows should be made from very straight sticks. Good materials are goldenrods and mullen, since they are naturally straight. Like with the bow, the wood for the arrows should also be dry and dead, but a green wood may be used if you have the time to dry it first. The arrows should be half the length of the bow or as long as the bow can be drawn back. The wood for arrows should be smooth and free of all imperfections. Make a notch at the bottom of every arrow for the string. You can make different kinds of arrowheads. The easiest and most elementary is to sharpen the front of the arrow. Dont forget to harden it on the fire. Arrowhead can be made from metal, glass, stone or bone. Make a notch at the front of the arrow, insert the arrowhead in it and tighten the arrowhead in the wood with some string. Use feathers for stabilizers (known as fletching) of the arrow. You can glue the on the sides or split the arrow at the back, insert the feather and then wrap the arrow with some thread.
