Breastfeeding Tips

Have you chosen to breastfeed your baby? How can you make sure that you will be successful?

Bringing a new baby into the world and then deciding to breastfeed your baby for the first year of life is a big task. You want to know what to expect so that you can make sure you do not fail.

You’ve given birth and now comes the task of feeding your baby. What can you do to make sure that your baby latches on properly? A bad latch can be quite painful and cause some mothers to give up breastfeeding.

Make sure that your baby has a correct latch from the beginning. Bring the baby to your breast and make sure she has a wide open mouth to take in as much of the breast into her mouth as possible. Make sure that the lips cover the areola, not just the nipple portion.

If the baby is not latched on correctly, then the nipple will end up rubbing against the roof of the baby’s mouth causing soreness.

In the first days, you may not notice that the baby is latched on improperly if you’ve never breastfed before, but if you take a look at your breast after a feeding, and it is red, then you need to fix your baby’s latch.

You also want to make sure that the baby’s tummy is facing yours and point the breast towards the roof of her mouth when bringing the baby in.

To make sure you have a steady milk supply, feed your baby as needed. Each time your baby eats, your body makes more milk to keep up with the demand.

Use a nursing pillow. The nursing pillow will hold your baby in the perfect position to nurse without you having to hold her yourself. This makes things easier for you while you are recovering from labor.

Drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated while nursing. Breastfeeding will keep you up at all hours of the night. Keep a glass of water near your bed and you won’t have to worry about it.

Breastfeeding your baby will allow you to bond with your baby. Your baby loves being in such close contact with her mother. Enjoy this time with your new baby. By breastfeeding your baby, you are ensuring that your baby will grow up healthy and strong.
