Cloud Atlas OST
It’s not very common to see films nowadays whose soundtracks are composed by several people. So it is a bit surprising to find out that the Cloud Atlas soundtrack is the work of three great music composers. The score for the highly-anticipated film adaptation of David Mitchell’s best-selling novel is the work of three people – Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. These are three well-respected composers with a body of work that speaks of quality and creativity. With that said, the Cloud Atlas soundtrack will surely contain tracks and tunes that’ll please the ears.
Tom Tykwer, who also co-directed, co-produced as well as co-wrote the movie’s screenplay is a well-known film director, composer and screenwriter. Born in Germany, Tykwer began creating amateur films at the very young age of eleven. When he got out of high school, he started applying to film schools all over Europe but he was unsuccessful. He eventually moved to Berlin to work as a projectionist. As a professional filmmaker, Tykwer started by making two short films – Because in 1990 and Epilog in 1992. These opened the doors for him to make his very first feature movie called Deadly Maria.
After making his second feature Winter Sleepers, Tykwer gained international fame with his third feature Run Lola Run which was a huge hit in Germany. The movie went on to achieve success worldwide. His career blossomed from there and he went on to work with Hollywood stars such as Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi and Cate Blanchett. His first Hollywood film is the conspiracy thriller starring Clive Owen titled The International. Most of the music for his films were composed by him, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. They call themselves the Pale 3.
Reinhold Heil is a film composer whose main body of work lies with film music. He is also a former member of the Nina Hagen Band and Spliff. The Nina Hagen Band is a group formed by German singer Catharina Hagen. Spliff, on the other hand, is a new wave rock band in the 80’s. They used to be the Nina Hagen Band when they were still performing with Hagen but they used Spliff when Hagen went to pursue a solo career. Heil had also composed music for the series Without a Trace and John from Cincinnati. For his work on these series, he won four awards from the ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards.
Johnny Klimek on the other hand is an Australian TV and film composer. He had collaborated several times with Heil and Tykwer. He has worked on movies like One Hour Photo, The International, and Killer Elite as well as television series like Deadwood.
Cloud Atlas is adapted from David Mitchell’s 2004 novel of the same name. It’s co-directed by Tom Tykwer and The Wachowskis (Lana and Andy). It stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon and Jim Sturgess.
As what’s customary, the Cloud Atlas soundtrack will likely be released a week or two before the movie hits theaters.
