It’s that time of year again when the thermometer drops and we all must re-adjust to cold temperatures. This seasonal change generally causes most outdoorsmen to seek the pleasures of some sporting event on the good old TV. Living vicarously through some smuck on the TV doesn’t have to be the only way to enjoy the outdoors during these cold winter months. If you have an outdoor sport like me, you can still enjoy it as long as you enlist the proper tools to keep you cozy. This is where the Coleman SportCat Catalytic heater comes in.
Have you ever heard of a Catalytic heater? Me neither, as far as I knew it was some part that attached to your muffler on your car. However the geniuses at the Coleman corporation found a way to create a heater that burned better without using a super large flame. Basically they use a piece of metal called platinum and propane to create a long lasting heat source.
My winter sport of choice is Ice Fishing. Yes, sounds like a crazy thing to do. Go sit on a large ice cube for hours on end to possibly catch a fish that you could have simply gone down to the local grocery store and bought. Well there’s more to it, anticipation, patience and fun are just some of the feelings you will experience during Ice Fishing. Well as you can guess it does get pretty balmy on the ice so I picked up this Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic heater and tried it out recently. In short it worked as advertised. Pop in one of those little green propane tanks, flip the dial to On and light with a match and walla..instant heat. The neato factor is that there is no visible flame as this pumps heat out, however the top of the unit gets super hot so don’t try touching it. The Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic heater comes with a nifty looking, four legged, base so that you can place the device in a safe place. The heater takes about ten minutes to get to full heat and about the same to cool down after you turn the propane off. Because the technology behind the catalytic heater uses less propane, you can propbably get about ten to twelve hours of heat from one small green propane tank.
I give the unit four stars out of five. I only had two issues with the unit. The first being a pungent odor that filled my Ice Fishing Shanty after about an hour of use. I’ve read reviews of others having this issue but figured that they had fixed this annoyance since I just purchased this in January of 2012. It seems that you need to let this device run outdoors for a few hours after pulling it out of the box to burn off the newness so I highly recommend you do that regardless of when you buy the Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic heater. The second issue was that the unit was rather difficult to light in the wind. Yes, that issue isn’t necessarily a manufacturer defect but something for potential purchases of this product to be aware of. They make an instantlight model where the igniter is built into the unit instead of manually starting the unit with a match or lighter. The instantlight model may work better under windy condittions.
All in all the Coleman SportCat PerfecTemp Catalytic heater was a worthy purchase. I plan to not only use it for Ice Fishing but other activities such as kids cool weather sporting events, in my pop-up camper and camping in general.
