Common Causes of Blocked Drains

PlungerA blocked drain causes no end of problems around the home, with just a small blockage able to build up into a real problem. If you don’t actively try and prevent the build up of these blockages, you’re going to end up with both a bathroom and a kitchen that’s completely out of bounds. So what are the most common causes of household drains blocking?

Grease and Fat

This is easily the most common cause, and also the simplest to prevent. Many budding chefs or busy cooks will simply dispose of the grease and fat leftovers down the sink without a second thought. However, fatty substances harden and cling to the inside of pipes, eventually building up so much so that no liquid can get through. Instead, grease and fat should be sealed in containers and then disposed of in your rubbish.

If you’re living in a house with more than one person, this can become a real issue for your shower drains. As hair builds up, it means your shower can’t drain as well as it should. This causes a back up of water and, if you’re not careful, a very flooded bathroom floor.

The only way to really prevent this is to remove the drain cover every few weeks and use a specific implement, or even just a fork, to remove potential hair blockages. It’s not a fun job, but it’s a very necessary one to keep your drains clean and clear.

Trees and leaves

Not an issue inside the home, but definitely one that is relevant at this time of year. Leaves can collect in your gutters and cause blockages, which in turn can lead to very serious issues in your home, including water leaking into your house or the foundations.

You need to also be on the watch for a build-up of leaves and debris in your outdoor drains, which can mean your garden floods on rainy days and creates a very unpleasant problem. When the leaves start to fall, get the ladder out and clear out your gutters to make sure it doesn’t become an issue.

Foreign objects

This is a common issue with toilets as the wrong things are flushed away, and it’s something that can be a very real issue for households with small children. Everything from nappies to small toys cause problems and although it might not initially block the pipe, over time it will stop water from flowing freely, causing it to back up and resulting in some pretty unpleasant issues.

Make sure no sanitary items or nappies are ever put down the toilet and use a childproof lock over the lid so no toys end up getting flushed away.

Blocks Drains are a Big Issue

With blocked drains causing such a big issue for many homes, its no surprise that there are companies on hand to deal with any sudden drain-emergencies. Many are available round the clock, seven days a week, to make sure you don’t have to stress too much when your drains back up at 3am on a Sunday morning.

However the best way to give yourself peace of mind is to get your drains cleaned regularly to make sure blockages won’t ever have a chance to build up. Some companies use the latest drain jetting technology to make sure everything from grease to foreign objects are removed, while investing in regular cleaning ensures your drains will always run smoothly and you won’t run the risk of a build-up, a flood and the chance of large-scale damage to your property.
