The use of compression socks for calf pain does have some merit, as long there isn’t excruciating pain. When there is this type of pain present, more than likely there is a serious injury that requires medical attention. Compression stockings primarily provide extra support and help reduce swelling in legs and feet.

When we have mild aches and soreness in calves, the extra support and graduated pressure that compression socks provide, work well as a pain reliever. Many times, all the lower muscles are in need of is added support. Compression socks also improve circulation, which aids in the healing process of any type of injury.

For those who don’t know much, or maybe nothing, about compression stockings, but want to know, here’s a brief explanation.

Most people begin by wearing moderate compression stockings that can be bought over the counter and do not require a prescription or doctor’s order and if they meet their needs then all is well and no need for medical advice.

Moderate compression is 10-15mmHg and 15-20mmHg and if you find that this level of compression isn’t doing what you need it to, then it might be time to get a professional opinion. It can’t hurt; however, to give them a try first as this can potentially save you a lot of time and money if they meet your needs.

It helps to know the most common causes of calf pain, so that you can avoid it altogether and this is exactly what’s coming up next.

The number one reason for calf pain is not preparing the lower leg muscles for the task at hand. That’s right, improper warm up or no warm up at all, as well as not being physically conditioned for the sport or activity involved. The second most common cause of calf pain is improper footwear for a specific sport or activity.

Coming in third, is over training primarily done by athletic types that are pushing too hard, especially those involved in sports such as tennis and basketball that require them to stop on a dime and change direction just as quickly. These types of movements can place abnormal stress on the lower legs causing calf pain.

Many athletes wear compression leg sleeves that provide even more support than athletic compression socks, so if you’re an athletic type you might want to check into compression leg sleeves. Compression leg sleeves cover only the leg not the foot and are sold in pairs and singles.

You will find that there are compression socks for calf pain to fit any occasion whether it’s casual, sports, work or dress wear, since they come in various styles and colors. Furthermore, wearing compression stockings on a daily basis can help prevent aches and pains in the lower legs.
