The detail of PAN card is confidential in nature. You are not allowed to have the details of a PAN card unless you have been authorized and approved by the Indian Government. The details include various pieces of personal information as well as financial information in regard to dealings with the Indian Government.

Permanent account numbers began in 1961. Any person in India that is required to submit income tax must have a PAN Card. PAN cards are an official identification card in India and many institutions and organizations require customers and members to have one. If you wish to own or sell property, run a business, open bank accounts or buy and sell stock you are also required to have a PAN card. You can use your PAN card as official identification for utilities or accounting firms.

The detail of PAN card includes the PAN holder’s first, middle and last name, the PAN holder’s father’s first, middle and last name, PAN holder’s birthday in DD/MM/YYYY format, PAN number, PAN holders signature and a color photo of the PAN holder.

The PAN is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric number which follows a specific format. It starts with 5 letters followed by 4 numbers followed by an ending letter.

The first 3 spaces are letters series running from AAA to ZZZ. Each letter is independent of the next and is used as an alphabetic check.

The fourth letter can be one of the following:
A — Association of Persons (AOP)
B — Body of Individuals (BOI)
C — Company
F — Firm
G — Govt
H — HUF(Hindu Undivided Family)
J — Artificial Juridical Person
L — Local Authority
P — Person
T — AOP (Trust)

The fifth letter of a personal PAN is the first letter of the surname.

The 6th to 9th spaces are numbers which are sequential numbers running from 0001 to 9999.

The last space is a letter used for an alphabetic check.

If fraudulent detail of PAN card is suspected, then you should notify your local authorities. If you are waiting on your card you can check your Pan Card Status by name and date of birth.
