Dollar Store Gifts That Won't Make You Look Cheap

Birthdays of friends and family don’t always fall at the right time in the pay cycle, right? Inevitably one pops up right after all the bills have been paid. Maybe you just want to give someone a small gift to make their day, or as a thank you for something they did for you. Whatever the gift giving occasion, there are ways to shop for affordable gifts at the dollar store that won’t make you look cheap.

For the ladies, you can create a Pedicure in a box for under $10, including gift wrap and a card:

  • Gift box with cellophane bag – comes with a small gift tag type card.
  • Ribbon- not curly ribbon. They have spools of cute ribbon that will be just enough to make a cute bow on the gift.
  • Tissue paper or shred
  • Lotion
  • Body Scrub
  • Toe nail clippers
  • Nail polish
  • Toe separators
  • Total: $8 plus local tax

Position everything neatly in the box, on top of the crumpled tissue paper or shred. Set the whole thing down in the cellophane bag. Tie the ribbon just above the tallest item. Trim excess cellophane if needed.

Note: Sometimes you can only find the gift box sets with decorations that you don’t want on them. This problem is easily solved by assembling the box inside out, so that it is white on the outside. You can decorate it if you like, or leave it as is.

Another option for a girlfriend is a Spa Basket:

  • Cute basket or other container
  • Facial mask
  • Moisturizer
  • Headband
  • Body scrub
  • Shiny cellophane to wrap it in
  • Ribbon – see note above
  • Card
  • Total: $8 plus local tax

Here is a good all purpose gift you can create and have on hand for last minute gift giving needs:

  • Coffee Mug
  • Shred
  • Candy or cookies
  • Instant coffee (something gourmet-like, not your basic instant coffee)
  • Cellophane
  • Ribbon
  • Total: $6 plus local tax

Note: You may decide to substitute the coffee and candy for tea light or votive candles. This way if you are using them as gifts on hand, you don’t have to worry about the perishables expiring.

Other great ideas include candles, picture frames, and vases filled with candies or other small items.

The thing that makes the biggest difference here is presentation. Take your time in how you put the items together and wrap them up and tie the bow. This is what sets it apart and shows you cared enough to take the time to put the gift together and present it neatly.
