In the Blue Corner: Weighing in at 14.6 lbs, The DC40 ‘Origin’

Design & Practical Aspects (Points: 8/10)

The DC40 takes on the classic futuristic yet practical Dyson design. The origin is not a full sized vacuum, but not a compact either – it lies somewhere in between, like a mid sized vacuum with dimensions: 41.9 x 14.3 x 12.2 inches. Its very light at just over 14.5 lbs and is fitted with the revolutionary Dyson ball technology, so it is an absolute to dream to use — no need for dragging it back and forth to get round corners — it can turn on a dime. The practical specifications are pretty decent too with a max reach of just over 40 ft and bin capacity of 0.42 gallons.

Cleaning Performance & Technology (Points: 8/10)

It is fitted with radial root cyclone technology and has an impressive suction power of 200 Air watts along with being fitted with a motorized brush bar and self-adjusting cleaner head to minimize loss of suction. Trust me, the DC40 origin is more than capable of beating out most other non-Dyson full sized vacuum cleaners.

Accessories & Attachments (Points: 7/10)

With the multi floor version you get a combination tool — that acts like a crevice for vacuuming small gaps & areas that also can double up with a brush nozzle for powered dusting — and it also comes with a stair tool. If you get the DC40 animal, you also get a tangle free turbine tool, a highly effective attachment at picking up dog & cat hair from a range of surfaces (great for cleaning the inside of cars).

In the Red Corner: Weighing in at 17.3 lbs, The DC65 ‘Animal’

Design & Practical Aspects (Points: 8/10)

The DC65 is Dyson’s ‘biggest’ (dimensions: 42.4 x 13.4 x 15.4 inches) and ‘baddest’ vacuum cleaner around offering the max practical specifications with a bin capacity of 0.55 gallons (being fitted with the one touch press hygienic release mechanism) and extensive max reach of over 50 ft. Slightly heavier than the DC40 given its bigger, but it is also fitted with the Dyson ball technology, so in comparison to most uprights — the DC65 is a ‘blessing’ to clean with.

Cleaning Performance & Technology (Points: 9.5/10)

Dyson claim & has been consequently proven that the DC65 can clean better than any other vacuum across hard floors and soft flooring — this is due to several engineering achievements. Firstly, it is fitted with a huge 245 Air watts of pure constant suction cleaning power this is then combined with an advanced (more efficient) radial root cyclone technology and re-configured brush bar (that applies 25% more power than the DC40) as well as the self adjusting cleaner head. This upright DC65 vacuum is literally ‘the’ powerhouse on the vacuum cleaning market, nothing really compares.

Accessories & Attachments (Points: 9/10)

There are three versions of the DC65 (for specifics in differences between them click here). The multi floor comes with the basic Dyson cleaning set & the Animal offers the same as the DC40 Animal does as specified above. But the third version, the Animal Complete ‘is’ pretty much the ‘ultimate’ in vacuum cleaners: it offers no more than 8 additional attachments.

What’s the Difference Between the DC40 and DC65?

The first major aspect is the size & respective practical specifications. The DC40 is smaller & lighter than the DC65, hence is suited to cleaning a small house or large apartment and I think is slightly better suited for those with mobility issues (but perhaps the DC59 would be a better option still, if this is the case) whereas the DC65 is more for cleaning a mid/large sized house. There is also a clear difference in the cleaning performance between the two — the DC65 is by far the better machine in this respect.

Who Wins? Which Dyson Vacuum the DC40 or DC65 Should You Buy?

If you have a small sized house or flat/apartment due to the DC40’s more compact size, it would make more sense for you to go with that option. However, if you have a mid to large sized house the DC65 is your ideal cleaning machine. But, now you know the distinct differences between the two — which will you go for the DC40 or DC65 and why (let me know in the comments below)?
