Effective Parenting Techniques

Parenting involves so much more than feeding and clothing children and effective parenting techniques do not always come natural. There are books, video, shows, friends, family and stranger that all seem to know how to parent. The truth is, parenting is about your style, individual children, values and what works for your family. What works for an infant may not work for another, or for the same child, as he grows into a toddler, child, pre-teen, teenager and young adult. Effective Parenting techniques are at hand to help you in your quest to raise a confident, well adjusted child from infancy to adulthood.

Your Child’s identity:

  1. Self-esteem is built by positive feed back from her parent.
  2. Communicate by asking open ended questions which encourage dialog among your child and yourself.
  3. Artistic, athletic, intellectual or other talents should be enhanced by activities outside school.
  4. A confident child is allowed to express appropriately her talents, thoughts, fears and questions.

Use experiences as a teaching opportunity:

  1. When your child comes home with a problem it is the perfect opportunity to help your child think of different ways to handle it.
  2. Role play situations your child may encounter.
  3. Encourage conversation about how others were treat unfairly or with fairness.

Disciplining children effectively:

  1. Make the disciplines appropriate for the age of the child, the situation and consistent.
  2. If your child is an infant or toddler it is your responsibility to be sure the environment is safe and free of harmful items.
  3. As your child grows you should teach him how to use items or when to get an adult.
  4. Types of discipline are to be age appropriate in how and length of time.
  5. Timeout is more effective for toddlers and small children and should last one minute for year of age of the child.
  6. Positive reinforcement, such as, when a child may help make a meal that he chooses for one meal a week and be sure to make it fun.
