During my last pregnancy, I was very overweight. I didn’t exercise at all before pregnancy and definitely didn’t exercise at all during pregnancy. After my baby was born I was determined to get the weight off once and for all and to never let it come back. I worked out hard and successfully lost 70 pounds! I was still about 15 pounds overweight though when I found out that I am expecting again.
That wasn’t the plan. I wanted to be completely down to a healthy weight before I ever got pregnant again. Things don’t always go as planned. So I decided that I would workout throughout my entire pregnancy to keep my health in check. The problem was that I had such horrible morning sickness and exhaustion in the beginning that working out was just impossible.
I talked with my doctor and she said that exercise is so good for you during pregnancy. You, of course, should talk to your own doctor before starting any exercise program during pregnancy. Her suggestions to me were to not do any type of exercise that I was not already doing before I got pregnant. For example, I was already running a lot so continuing to run would be fine for me. But had my body not already been conditioned to run, then I should not start training to run now that I am pregnant.
There are some things that you need to remember about exercising during pregnancy. You want to make sure that you drink plenty of water. You need to be drinking more water than usual anyway during pregnancy, but if you are exercising, it is even more important to increase your water intake. You don’t want your heart rate to get too high. The best way to keep track of your heart rate is to get a good heart rate monitor to wear during exercise. Then you can see if your heart rate is getting a little too high. This is the heart rate monitor I personally use and love it! It is most important to listen to your body. If you feel like you need to stop, then you should definitely stop. Pregnancy is not the time to push yourself to the limits during your workouts. Working out is a great way to stay healthy during pregnancy and to keep your weight in check. Remember that you will be gaining weight during your pregnancy and that is good and healthy. You are growing a baby! But in my case, since I’m already overweight, I don’t want to gain excessively. So exercise will help me to keep my weight in check!
