Foot and Leg Cramp Prevention

Foot and leg cramp prevention is doable and I know this to be true, because I have been able to avoid them now for several years. I used to get foot and leg cramps all the time and they can be very painful. Most of the time they only last a minute or two, at least in my case, but there have been many times it seemed much longer. I know how to get rid of foot and leg cramps pretty fast now too, but that is another article for another time. For now, let’s focus on how to prevent foot and leg cramps.

The first thing you can do to avoid foot and leg cramps is to keep muscles strong and flexible. Yes, this means exercise, especially stretches, and yes, there are specific foot exercises you can do to strengthen and stretch foot muscles and believe it or not you can find them on youtube. When muscles cramp up they’re either weak, tired, tight or cold. Therefore, it’s vital to try and keep them warm, strong and flexible if you want to avoid foot and leg cramps.

For those who are athletic and like to push beyond limitations, don’t do it. When leg muscles are overworked or stressed it can cause them to cramp. To put it another way, don’t over train or try to show off. To add to this, be sure you always do a warm up and stretches before any strenuous activity or sport.

Maintain a healthy weight, the more you’re overweight the higher the risk for foot and leg cramps. Also, if you have poor circulation in the legs and feet this can increase the risk of leg cramps. Improve foot and leg circulation and you can prevent foot and leg cramps. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, which is another cause of foot and leg cramps. In addition, consume more electrolytes/ minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium, chloride and magnesium.

Do your best to avoid stress, as this causes muscles to be tense and tight and we don’t want that. We want muscles to be relaxed and flexible not contracted and tight. Stress is one thing you want to avoid before bed time, there isn’t anything much worse than to be wakened by a painful foot or leg cramp. I can’t prove it, but I would be willing to bet that many night time foot and leg cramps are caused by stressing out right before bed time.

Massage feet and legs on a regular basis to relax muscles and improve circulation. This works remarkably well and feels good to boot. You can do it yourself or do it my way, which is to use a foot and leg massager. Either way, this tip alone, will help prevent foot and leg muscle cramps.
