Furnaces are a system used in the home to provide optimal heat and comfort. Because a furnace can generate a great deal of heat, the system can be dangerous to use when installed incorrectly. It is essential that when you have a furnace installed in the home, you work with professionals who know exactly what they are doing. Contractors much follow strict criteria when installing a new unit to provide the home a safe environment during the winter season. Below is a check list of what should be followed when installing a new furnace system.

Load Calculation
To get started, a contractor must configure the load calculation of the home. This will help to understand the heating and cooling needs of the home. Most home owners think the amount of heat needed in the home is based on the size of the home. However this is not the case. The load calculation will help the contractor to know how large the furnace should be as well as how to install the system. A quality technician will understand this and work accordingly to install the proper system in your home.

Once a new furnace is installed, the technician who installed the unit will need to explain the installation to you as well as the building inspector. Such factors as the chimney must be inspected by a professional to ensure all building codes and installation criteria have been followed appropriately. If not, the unit can cause harm to your home such as catching fire or emitting harmful gases.

Outdoor installations
If you have a furnace installed in the garage of the home, the unit will need to be installed in a different manner. The furnace must be elevated off the floor to a certain height to separate the unit from the floor. The standard height from the floor is around 18 inches and this should be the amount of space from the floor to the point of ignition. You must also have the system in an area of the garage that is clear and free from potential harm.

Proper Ventilation
Proper ventilation is also a factor that must be considered when installing a new system. Venting systems must be included in the installation so that the gases produced can be removed from the home. A blower type furnace will need to have 2 square inches per 1000 BTUs of input to be operating effectively. Every furnace type requires two combustion air openings.

Restricted Areas
Qualified technicians understand that there are restricted areas where a furnace must not be installed. A gas fired furnace is not allowed to be installed in any bedroom, bathroom or closet area. An attic installation requires the space to be at least 5 feet tall and have a larger opening near the furnace. The attic must also have a light so that the furnace area can be seen and be installed near an electrical outlet.

Underneath the Home
If a furnace is installed under the home, the unit must be suspended above the ground by at least 6 inches. If a furnace is not suspended but on the ground, the unit must be resting on a slab of concrete that is at least 3 inches in thickness. You must also have visibility in this area so the unit can be worked on and serviced when needed.

If you are in need of a new furnace in the home, working with a professional can ensure that the system is installed correctly and will work efficiently. Take the time to research the providers in your area so you know that you are only working with top-rated professionals so you can ensure the safety and integrity of your home.
