Great Outdoor Grills and Grilling on a Small Apartment Balcony
Summer is here, and thoughts of grilling outdoors come to mind. Your outdoor area for doing this is your small balcony for your apartment unit. If you are allowed to grill on your balcony, there are several ways to make this work well for you, no matter how small your balcony. Make sure you check the fire department codes for your city or town first. Many towns have ordinances against open flame grills on balconies. In that case, an electric grill, one with high heat, can work just as well. Also, they tend to be smaller and more lightweight. This is a plus on a small space balcony! Some electric grills are powerful enough to sear steaks much like a propane or charcoal grill. Once you are cleared for grilling on an apartment balcony, the next step is figuring out which type of grill will work best for you and your needs on a small balcony.
If you have a small tabletop grill, you might want to check out grill stands. There are plenty of grill shelves and stands that are portable; some fold, others roll on wheels. There are useful stands for some specific brands of grills and other stands work well with any table top or electric table top grill. Some, including electric ones, come on carts when purchased. Sometimes, room for a grill is sparse. In that case, even if you get a freestanding one, you’ll want a smaller one. Smaller gas grills on wheels can be found, which can easily be wheeled in and out of your apartment and balcony. Weber makes some with wheels that are on the small side. If the grill is to remain on the balcony, invest in a good all weather grill cover to keep it safe from harm from various weather.
Even on a small balcony, some sort of seating nearby is a good idea when grilling, unless you are comfortable standing up the whole time!
Whatever type of grill you buy, again, make sure if you plan to use it on your small apartment balcony that your local fire ordinances allow this, or check to see what type of grilling on balconies is allowed. Then you can research the various makes and models and decide which one will work best for you. Afterwards, enjoy the cookout!
