Living in an apartment for the first time are you? Thinking of or need help setting up apartment kitchens seems that it would be easy but if you have never lived on your own before this task can seem quite daunting. How to set up kitchen appliances and what cooking utensils you will need can be very mind boggling. Usually first time home owners do not want to ask their families for help figuring out what is needed for a first time kitchen because the new home owner wants to feel self dependent, secure and confident now that they are on their own. Typically apartment kitchens are quite small so you really have to know what you are doing and need if you want a functional easy to maneuver in kitchen. So forget about everything you need for an apartment for now and just focus on your kitchen apartment design for your small kitchen apartment. You need to start a list as you read this article. Regardless of how old you are whether you are 19 or 29 you already have eating patterns and know the types of foods you will be eating. Of course this will all rely on whether you can afford the same tastes you had when living with your parents. For the purposes of this article we will assume you can afford the meals you love most. Just buy enough so you can go a few days without washing them if you have the luxury of owning a dishwasher in your first apartment. Pots and pans are different, don’t buy enough to last a few days just buy the types and sizes you need for the meals you will want to prepare. Think about what you will want to cook and what sizes and shapes of pots and pans you will need to get the job done. Pots and pans take up quite a bit of room so don’t buy more than you need. For years I had only one frying pan and a small pot and a large pot. You will want to wash these, right after every meal.

The next thing you will want to figure out is what small appliances you will want in your small apartment kitchen. These are small appliances that will sit out on your counters and be easily accessible in a cupboard or pantry. Some items you might want to keep on your counter are appliances like coffee machines or keurig coffee machines, toaster ovens and microwaves. When deciding on what small appliances will be needed in your apartment kitchen make sure to question yourself as to whether the appliance is a necessity or just a nice to have. If it is a nice to have then maybe you can wait until you have more money and or room. Once you have all of your small appliances picked out now it is time to figure out what spices, sundry items and all condiments you want. Things like salt, pepper, oregano, garlic salt, onion salt, ketchup, mustard, relish and mayonnaise are all things you will probably want either in your pantry or a cupboard or with some you will have to put in the refrigerator once opened.

Remember that you don’t need to have everything you can think of as soon as you move into your first apartment. Just have the basics you require and add items gradually over time. Living life is not a race so take your time and add small kitchen appliances as you can afford them. Do not use your credit card unless you absolutely have to.

Lastly when setting up a kitchen in an apartment make sure to only have what you need on the counters and organize drawers and cupboards to have the items you will use most close by. You want to be able to efficiently work through your small kitchen without fighting yourself through the process.
