Herbs for High Blood Pressure May Reduce the Health Risks Involved

Hypertension, or high blood pressure is known as the silent killer for good reason, it affects about 50 million American people per year. Hypertension is the most common form of cardiovascular disease. Symptoms are often invisible or shrugged off as simply feeling tired or jittery. Herbs for high blood pressure may help reduce the risks of heart attack, stroke, or other serious illness caused by hypertension.

The heart pushes blood through the arteries so they can deliver oxygen to all vital organs and circulate nutrients throughout the body. The force at which blood hits the artery walls is measured as pressure. Normal pressure is 120/80 to 129/89, spoken as 120 over 80. Higher numbers indicate high blood pressure, and lower numbers indicate low blood pressure.

The simple fact that even severe high blood pressure has no obvious symptoms makes it a silent killer. By the time people are diagnosed with hypertension, it’s often too late to prevent serious injury to vital organs and the vessels. Severe hypertension causes injury to arteries, the heart, brain, and kidneys.

Risk Factors for High Blood Pressure

Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, causing the arteries to maintain a stressed rigidity. This rigidity causes the veins to narrow and push blood through harder.

Sodium causes excess water retention and expands blood volume. This increase in blood volume ultimately increases blood pressure, causing hypertension.

Caffeine is a stimulant that raises a person’s heart rate. All cardiovascular stimulants can cause hypertension.

A diet low in potassium, magnesium and calcium poses the risk of hypertension. The American diet is very high in fats, and sodium, which ultimately cause health problems.

Regular alcohol intake, obesity, and certain medications can cause high blood pressure. Birth control pills, steroids, NSAIDS, decongestants, and even some prescription drugs can cause hypertension.

Supplements and herbs for high blood pressure reduce the risks of damage caused by hypertension. Consider adding certain foods to your daily diet to ensure you’re getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy body. Diet and exercise are the most important factors in a healthy lifestyle.

Remember to eat 8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables if possible; otherwise go for frozen. Rarely rely on canned foods due to the amount of sodium and preservatives used in the canning process.

Limit animal proteins to 6 ounces per day and try to avoid salt whenever possible. People always reach for the salt shaker when they feel they need more flavor in their foods. Most foods have plenty of sodium and should be seasoned with a sodium-free salt substitute or substitute butter spray.

Eat 4 to 5 servings of nuts, seeds or dried beans every week. Nuts are an excellent source of good fats that will help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Take supplements and herbs for high blood pressure including calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C. Many others help reduce hypertension and should be taken into consideration. Discuss options with your doctor to lower your blood pressure and maintain a healthy lifestyle without losing all of those flavorful foods you enjoy.
