Besides other techniques to drive clients such as sight and sound, lighting too offers a good return on investment given its overall impact on a business. Very less people look out for businesses that are dimly lit since they convey an image of untrustworthiness.
The use of natural basically gives a business an open and cheerful look and actually can boost sales. Saladworks, a chain of fast-casual restaurants based in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, recently redesigned its stores to minimize the use of fluorescent lights and to include a glass front and skylights that allow in more natural light.
A series of studies by energy research firm Heschong Mahone Group found that stores using natural light experience sales that are 40 percent higher than those of similar stores using fluorescent lighting.98 In a retail environment, proper lighting should highlight featured products and encourage customers to stop and look at them.
Sustainability and Environmentally Friendly Design
Today, more and more businesses are designing their office buildings in more environmentally friendly ways not only because it is the right thing to do but also because it saves a lot of funds. Firms are also using recycled materials; installing high-efficiency lighting, fixtures, and appliances; and using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles in construction and renovation. McDonalds franchisees recently opened restaurants in Chicago, Illinois; Riverside, California; and Cary, North Carolina, which meet LEED standards.
The restaurants generate a portion of their own electricity from photovoltaic solar panels and even contain high-efficiency appliances; furnishings made from recycled materials (including denim) and renewable resources, such as bamboo and sun- flower seed board; water-conserving plumbing fixtures that will save 550,000 gallons of water annually in each outlet; permeable pavement that minimizes the runoff of rainwater into city waterways; and cisterns that collect rainwater for use in landscape irrigation. The restaurants use Solatube lights providing natural lighting to most of the buildings (and reduce energy consumption by 24 percent) and energy-saving LED lighting that adjusts automatically to complement the level of natural light. A roof garden on the Chicago restaurant not only is attractive but also insulates the building naturally. McDonalds even used paints that do not emit chemical odors. The company plans to build more green restaurants in the future.
Good lighting and environmentally design can help you get good returns on your business. Move higher!
