Where do I begin?

In order to work as a garbage collector at the NYC department of sanitation, you must first pass a written test and physical exam administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). The tests are taken on computers, and you can get a preliminary score after you have finished. Once you have passed the exam, your name will be placed on a list and you will be called up when there is a need for more sanitation workers. All possible candidates must hold a valid commercial driver’s license at the time of appointment and pass both a medical exam and a background check.

You do not need a college degree to become a garbage man, but you must have a high school diploma or pass the GED. Sanitation workers are also required to live in New York City, Westchester County, or Nassau County. If you do not live in these areas, you cannot become a garbage man in NYC.
