There are things to consider before you even look at curriculum. What are the reasons you are homeschooling for and which homeschool philosophy are you interested in? Once you figure this out, you can narrow down your search of curriculum.
Are you homeschooling for religious or spiritual reasons? Then you may only be interested in either religious or secular materials. That will definitely narrow down your options, that way you won’t need to waste time looking at curriculum that doesn’t follow your beliefs.
Will your child be returning to public/private school? If so, you will want to choose a curriculum that is in line with your state’s standards. You can request a list of curriculum that is used by the public school to use at home. Or you can look for curriculum that has a similar scope and sequence. If it doesn’t, you will need to fill in what it lacks.
Are you homeschooling for academic reasons? Is your child behind or ahead of his peers. When you’ve decided on the curriculum, you’ll need to choose the appropriate level. Placement tests for each curriculum should be available. Since each curriculum has its own scope and sequence, it may vary largely from one company to the next.
Visit a homeschool convention, it is the best way to rummage through different curricula and see everything in person. Sellers are on hand to answer any questions you may have. It is difficult to see what a curriculum is like from a 2 page sample online.
