Teak has become a very popular wood for outdoor furniture, and as more and more people set up their outdoor living space with quality products to create their oasis, cleaning issues do arise.
Teak is the perfect wood for outside, it can take the wet and the weather and if left untreated will simply fade to a beautiful silvery colour. But it will still get dirty with use. That family barbeque and lots of spills will eventually start to stain the surface. So, if you want to keep your outdoor teak looking its best then you do need to give it some care.
Once a Season Washing
Tak a spray bottle and fill it with a 50/50 solution of mild dishwashing soap and warm water, soft bristle scrub brush. You will also need a garden hose on a medium spray.
Do not use a pressure washer on teak or it will damage the surface. Have you ever cleaned your deck with a pressure washer? Then you know just how powerful it can be and can damage the wood.
If you have teak chairs, then start with them, by wetting down the chair with the garden hose, then take your spray bottle and spray the chair, then take a soft bristle brush and give it a good scrub, getting into all the crevices, then rinse well.
Let the chair dry naturally outside and then do the same to the table or other pieces you have.
Teak Protection – You Have Choices
If you have just purchased your outdoor teak furniture, and don’t want it to fade at all, then you will need to add a teak protector that will stop it from fading. If you do this, then you will need to reapply each year.
Some stores sell the teak with a varnish already on it, if this is the case then you may need to reapply the varnish after a few years.
If you prefer the natural beauty of the wood as it ages, but you have had it a few years now, and some of the wood looks really dry, then you can start to use teak oil to protect it, but you will need to do this once a season. It doesn’t take long and will keep your pieces in great shape for years to come.
Renewing Teak Outdoor Furniture
Teak Oil For Outdoor Teak Furniture
If you decide that you find that totally faded silvery look not to your liking then you can totally renew it with a good outdoor teak oil solution. (check out picture of table) Simply make sure your wood is perfectly clean using the method above, then let it dry naturally outdoors.
Once totally dry, you can then apply this teak oil. It will give the wood a good honey glow and protect it. As you can see in the picture it is a great way to renew older teak outdoor furniture.
So, when it comes to cleaning, use mild detergent, don’t blast it with a pressure washer, and you can choose to protect it or change its appearance with teak oil or leave it simply natural. Which ever way you decide to go, your wood will last a good long time if you keep it clean. If you decide that maybe it is time to treat yourself to a new teak patio furniture set then there are deals to be had.
If you are trying to get everything clean for the new warm season then you may also need to clean your outdoor cushions to bring them back to life, and you may want to consider a sun shade for your patio to stop fabrics and woods from fading. Enjoy your patio season!
