With the prevalence of diabetes these days, many people constantly ask the question, “How to stop type 2 diabetes?” Well the answer is… you can’t. Once you have diabetes, you have it for life. But there are ways on how to stop type 2 diabetes before it starts and complicates your life. Here are a few things you should do to ensure that you avoid diabetes and continue to life a happy and healthy lifestyle.

Getting Screened for Diabetes

This is the first step in preventing diabetes getting a hold over your life. Go consult a doctor and work up every laboratory exams and diagnostics needed to determine your risk for the disease. It is a wise decision to know this early if you are pre-diabetic or if you already have diabetes so that you can adjust your life accordingly and you can seek treatment and management immediately.

If the results say that you have diabetes then a lifestyle change and various medical treatment modalities are the ways for you to go. But if you are pre-diabetic (meaning that you have a high blood glucose level, but not high enough to be considered diabetes) then you can still stop your body from developing diabetes. If you are overweight, your ethnicity is Caucasian, African, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian, or if you have a family history of diabetes then you should definitely get screened as soon as possible.

Prevention Through Llifestyle Modification

Stopping the progression of pre-diabetes to full-blown diabetes is possible if you start making the right choices today. Type 2 diabetes is easily prevented because all you need to do is to adjust your lifestyle – no medications; no procedures; no surgeries – just plain lifestyle modification.

This starts of course with the proper diet – a type 2 diabetes diet. With such a diet, you are encouraged to increase your protein intake and lessen your carbohydrates and sugars. Protein is as good of an energy source as carbohydrates and sugars. They also have low glycemic indexes – meaning to say that proteins do not carry too much sugar that can elevate your blood glucose levels. Stocking up on fruits and vegetables are also advised, particularly those with high fiber content like cruciferous (leafy) vegetables, root crops and citrus fruits.

Exercise and rest go hand in hand. Both helps in controlling blood glucose and they ensure that it does not increase to very high and dangerous levels. Working out for at least half an hour per day for at least 5 to 6 times per week will already help control your blood sugar. Your body also needs adequate rest and sleep to combat stress, another culprit for increased blood glucose levels.
