What Are Side Effects

All drugs have effects on the body. They often have effects that are unexpected or undesirable. People and doctors considering taking or prescribing a drug must take these side effects into account and decide if the potential effects on the disease process is worth the potential side effects possible.

Hyaluronic Side Effects

The only known side effect is a higher level of alkaline phosphatase, which is an enzyme in the blood. What this means is not known at this time. Some people report skin rashes when the topical form is applied. Injections of Hyaluronic acid may cause pain and redness at the injection site.

Hyaluronic Uses

Hyaluronic acid is a Glycosaminoglycan and is an important and natural component of the body. It is part of the connective tissue that connects skin with other tissues. It is also a component of synovial fluid. Synovial fluid is a fluid that lubricates joints. It is especially important in the knees. Hyaluronic acid is also a component of the vitreous humor, which is what fills the eye.

It is used as a supplement to reduce bleeding in gingivitis in spray or gel form. It is also used as a topical application for healing chronic venous skin ulcers and wounds. One other use is as a lip filler in plastic surgeries. It is also indicated for treating joints that suffer with chronic osteoarthritis, especially the knee in injection or oral form. Injection is widely used and accepted in medicine, but more studies are needed to see if the oral form is truly efficient.

In fact, more study is needed in general. Many forms of the drug are approved by the FDA for use. There are many supplements, though, that require more study. Rather, they are popularly used more anecdotally than due to scientific proof.
