Identity Theft and A Clean Social Security Number

Social Security Number (SSN) identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country. It’s a problem that has left many young teens needing a clean Social Security Number after ID thieves stole their Social Security numbers and used them to get credit and to buy things that they never pay for. The thieves buy everything from cars, to jewelry, to clothes and even houses using the stolen SSN’s. Years later, the bad debt shows up on the victims credit history when they try to buy a car or apply for a student loan (See the video below). This is a crime against people of all ages and from all walks of life, even unborn babies because the thieves figure out and use SSN’s before the victim is born. Unfortunately, most people don’t do much to protect their identity. For example, you could use an identity protection service like Lifelock.com that offers users a cash payment if your identity gets stolen you’re a Lifelock customer.

How Social Security Numbers Get Stolen

Identity thieves take advantage of the format of Social Security numbers to steal the identity of unborn children. Unfortunately, victims of Identity theft have little recourse. By the time you realize you have a problem the thief is long gone and you’re stuck trying to clean up a financial nightmare. If you find yourself in this situation, the Social Security Administration can’t help clean up your finances or give you a clean Social Security Number. if you’re a victim of Social Security Number identity theft, you can get a new number assigned under certain circumstances.

Can You Get A New Social Security Number

According to the Social Security Online Electronic Leaflets website www.socialsecurity.gov, you can get a new SSN assigned after you do everything you can to repair the damage to your finances. However you can’t get a new number:

  • To avoid the consequences of filing for bankruptcy;
  • If you intend to avoid the law or your legal responsibility
  • If you’re a victim of Social Security Number identity theft or your card is lost or stolen, but there is no evidence that someone is using your number.

How To Apply For A New Social Security Number

If you believe applying for a new number is the way to go, you will have to prove your age, U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status and identity. If you want to get more information, ask for “Your Social Security Number And Card” (Publication Number 05-10002). You will also have to provide proof that you’re still being victimized by Social Security Number identity theft.

Bad Credit History, Filing Bankruptcy, More

There are a few things you need to be aware of if you get a new SSN or apply for bankruptcy. The new card doesn’t wipe away your bad credit history because your original card and its history are still on record with your debtors in your name. Ironically, you may also have trouble getting credit with the new card because of the lack of a credit history. This shows how important it is to protect your credit card and number. Unfortunately, for those that are already victims of Social Security Number identity theft, help is available but it’s not just a matter of getting a clean Social Security Number.
