In The City of Blinding Lights

Paris – the city of love. Stunningly beautiful and glittering with romance the city has so many appealing qualities, the French food, the architecture and of course; the style.

Paris is a hugely popular destination for those seeking a romantic break, adventurous students hoping to be captured by the Parisian magic and street style hunters and journalists from across the world looking to scout the most effortless, elegant style on the city streets.

French women just seem to ooze glamour and sophistication, their style is replicated by celebrities and fashion lovers worldwide. They seem to be able to put together a fantastic outfit yet make it look totally effortless at the same time.

Casual skinny jeans and striped tops are transformed by French women into the ultimate chic daywear by paring with expensive ballet flats, a designer handbag and of course the compulsory accessory – a tiny dog!

The majority of French style revolves around designer fashion, after all Paris is the home of couture with Paris fashion week being the most prestigious of all. This goes someway to explaining how French women achieve their chic style so effortlessly.

Another popular style is the classic little black dress paired with black opaque tights and elegant jewellery. Colour blocking can also be a chic way to get noticed, a mainly black outfit with a bright colour block coat for example is rally eye catching and very Parisian. This is a look often channelled by the ladies from Gossip Girl. The show was often filmed in Paris as the characters regularly travelled there.

The cast’s outfits were always impeccably styled, often consisting of printed dresses, black opaque tights, boots and coloured wool coats in winter. Summer saw them favour floral printed dresses or skater skirts with sheer tights.

The character Blair Waldorf was well known for her love of fashion tights. She was regularly seen wearing crochet or lace tights as well as the notoriously hard to style white tights, which she often incorporated into her school uniform.

Although Parisian fashion is classically very expensive and tends to be designer, there are ways you can emulate the chic style on a budget. Sheer tights and fashion tights are a great way to copy expensive styles as they are generally at a price that everyone can afford. Even designer fashion tights such as House of Holland start from around £12 so you can easily copy Blair Waldorf’s style!

It is better to splash out on more expensive accessories, such as a nice handbag or a good quality pair of shoes then mix it with high street dresses and skirts. Good quality tights such as House of Holland or Wolford will last you much longer than a cheaper pair but are still reasonably priced and will stop those dreaded ladders from ruining your outfit.

No matter what your budget, with some clever shopping you can easily be as stylish as Parisian women and emulate the Gossip Girl style.
