Roomba 780 or 880 – Which is Best for You?

Here, we will compare two premium robotic vacuum cleaners from iRobot the Roomba 780 against the Roomba 880 by firstly providing a brief overview of each (detailing their specifications & features etc.) and then a following section that highlights the difference between the two (ultimately pointing out which is the better model and from that you can also decide which Roomba is best for you).

Cleaning Technology & Navigation System

The Roomba 780 uses the Series II ‘three stage cleaning system’ (which is three independent features working together: i. the counter-rotating brushes, ii. side brushes and iii. AeroVac series II) as well as an ‘advanced cleaner head’ to effectively remove dirt, debris and pet hair from both hard flooring (e.g. tiles, wood) and soft flooring (e.g. carpets, rugs).

It also utilizes two useful cleaning technologies: the iAdapt Responsive technology – which basically allows the 780 to map out the room its cleaning (much like a GPS system) for the most efficient cleaning path, and the updated Dirt Detect Series II which allows it to find particularly dirty patches (through an acoustic & optical system in place) and then go on to the ‘persistent pass’ feature (where it will consistently vacuum over it back-and-forth, much like you would a normal vacuum, until its clean).

Battery Performance & Integrated Filters

The 780 can last for approximately 150 minutes, but if it were to run out of charge before finishing a job in hand — it will takes itself off to its home docking station to be charged until the 780 can carry on and finish the job in hand. Moreover, the 780 is fitted with a Dual HEPA filter system to capture allergens & dust particles and prevent them from being expelled into the air, leaving behind to just a healthy clean air supply for your home.

Features, Specifications & Accessories

This Roomba is packed with features: the on-board 7 days a week scheduling program (so you can set it to get-to-work whilst you are at work or on holiday), remote control, virtual wall light houses (the first Roomba vacuum to conduct room-to-room cleaning) and bin indicator (letting you know when it needs emptying). In terms of design it measures 13.9 by 3.4 by 13.9 inches and weighs in at approximately 14 lbs and has a dark grey finish. You also get a fair few extra accessories as well including an extra set of HEPA filters, cleaning brushes and additional cleaning tools.

Cleaning Technology & Navigation System

What really distinguishes the Roomba 880 from the 780 is the new ultra-powerful AeroForce system it has integrated (which is a system made up of the i. tangle free extractors, ii. airflow accelerator and iii. the highly efficient vacuum — here for more info), that allows it to be 50% more efficient & effective in the pick up of dirt, debris and pet hair than the 780 (also requiring a lot less maintenance due to it being essentially ‘brush free’) as well as a 60% bigger bin capacity (allowing it to go for longer before you need to empty it). It still utilizes the same dirt detect series II technology with persistent pass as well as the iAdapt responsive technology (and the additional aspects that come with that e.g. the escape feature etc.).

Battery Performance & Integrated Filters

The Roomba operates on a similar basis to the 780 as well, with a run time of around 120 minutes and it will automatically return to the home docking station to be charged once done. Moreover, it still uses the specialized HEPA filters to prevent allergens and fine dust particles escaping into the air supply.

Features, Specifications & Accessories

It also hosts a range of features such as: the virtual light houses & walls (that allow it to perform room-to-room cleaning as well as being able to contain it to a specific cleaning area without the need of a physical barrier there), bin indicators, remote control and 7 days a week scheduling program. The 880 carries on the minimalist circular design with a black finish, –although it is slightly larger (dimensions: 13.9 by 3.6 by 13.9 inches) and heavier.

Currently only available at iRobot.com, hence no reviews as of yet (as it has only just been released).

The Difference Between the 780 and 880

The most obvious factor being the improved AeroForce system with the 880 and the larger bin capacity. There are a couple of subtle differences too such as: the larger design and slight variation in the color finish.

Which Robot Vacuum Should You Buy the 780 or 880?

With a price difference of around $120 or so (in favor of the 880, being priced at $699.99) — it is clear that the improvements made with the 880 are reflected in its price tags. So, which robot vacuum to go for?

I would go for the 880, as although you would making a significant investment anyway with the 780 — for around just 20% more — you are getting the ‘best’ (as proven by CNet — see ‘the test‘ at the bottom) vacuum on the market, where it significantly outperforms even the Roomba 790 with regards to cleaning performance (as well as hugely reducing the amount of maintenance involved with the robot vacuum). In sum, for just an extra 20% or so in cost you are getting a far more powerful cleaning machine, that can last longer and requires less hassle to keep it going. But which Roomba will you go for and why?
