Is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the Next Star Trek

Yes, is Marvel’s Agents of Shield (AoS) the Next Star Trek? You read it right. Before all of you Comic Con Trekkies jump me, give me a minute to make a case for AoS. We all know that Star Trek is in a universe by it’s self. I’m sorry, once I got the idea I had to do it. Now that that’s out of the way I was saying Star Trek is going to be hard if not impossible to beat. I mean classic Star Trek with William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mister Spock, and DeForest Kelley as Leonard H. Bones McCoy took space travel and aliens to a whole new level in the late 60’s television show.

Star Trek Spin-offs

Though the show was cancelled after only three years, its small cult following has mushroomed into millions and spawned a Star Trek movie industry starring the cast from the original TV show. The original Star Trek and its subsequent movies where so popular that they birthed several TV spin-offs, including, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, and the Next Generation. So how can you even compare AoS to Star Trek you say? There are some similarities between the two that you might find interesting.

Captain America The First Avenger

While Star Trek has worked forward from the original TV show, Agents of Shield owes it’s beginning to a series of comic books that go all the way back to World War II. One of those comic series featured a character called Captain America. Captain America was a genetically engineered “super soldier” “created” by the United States and its Allies during WW II to fight against the Nazis.

Director Fury

Nick Fury was another of Marvel Comics American soldiers that fought against Nazi Germany. Fury wasn’t a “super soldier in the same vein as Captain America but he was the charismatic, he-man leader of a special unit of Army soldiers. Fury’s “Howling Commandos” could always fight their way out of the toughest spots.

The Avengers

Later, Marvel developed more comic book series that featured more “superheroes.” These characters had superhuman abilities that they used to save the world many times over. Marvel Studios has weaved together a string of movies that featured characters like Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye to name a few. The characters appeared in movies individually or as a team. The team of superheroes became known as “The Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”

S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Avengers were brought together by a super secret American spy organization known as Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, or S.H.I.E.L.D. S.H.I.E.L.D. works to protect the world from threats of unknown origin. That includes threats from earth or from outer space. They’re a cool version of the decades old conspiracy theory of a government program that “covers up” aliens and their spaceships that have been discovered on earth. Only now the cat is out of the bag after the Avengers turned back an alien invasion in what became known as “The Battle of New York.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC

Last but not least, Marvel created Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or AoS for television. Clark Gregg or Agent Colson of S.H.I.E.L.D from the Avengers movies is the central character of the AoS television program. Actually Agent Colson dies in one of the Avengers movies. Obviously he was miraculously brought back to life “somehow.” In the TV show, Agent Colson “assembles” a team that reports to Director Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. Colsons team travels the world in “The Bus” (A world class, super secret spy plane) to investigate threats to the security of America and to the world. AoS has just wrapped up Season One and been renewed for Season Two at this writing.

The Cast of AoS

  • Clark Gregg / Agent Phil Colson
  • Elizabeth Hensbridge / Agent Jemma Simmons
  • Ming-Na Wen / Agent Melinda “The Calvary” May
  • Brett Dalton / Double Agent Grant Ward
  • Iain De Caestecker / Agent Leo Fitz

For The Next Generation

Marvel’s Agents of Shield (AoS) may not be the Next Star Trek. But today, grandparents and parents that read Marvels Avengers Comics as children can sit down to watch AoS with their children and grandchildren. I believe some of these Avenger families will also assemble to take in some Star Trek movies. Can you think of a better way to boldly go where no man has gone before?
