Israel – God's Chosen People

Who is Israel and why are they a chosen people? To understand this we must look into the Bible, the Book of Exodus. The books title, “Exodus” comes from the Greek word exodos meaning, to “exit” or “departure.” It shows God’s mighty deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their exit from that land as the people of God. The Israelites were Hebrew speaking who lived in the Land of Canaan. The Book of Exodus talks about the Hebrew people being God’s chosen people, and from them will come the Messiah, the Christ.

The Israelites can be traced to the patriarch Jacob, who was the grandson of Abraham. Jacob, was renamed “Israel” after he wrestled all night with an angel. “When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.” Genesis 32:25

“The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“ Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” Genesis 32:27-28

This happened so that Jacob would rely on God to take care of him and his descendants, and not rely on his own will.

Why was Israel chosen by God to be his people? “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” Deuteronomy 7:6-8

The oath, or covenant God made with Abraham offered Abraham several promises. God promised: a great nation through his descendants, a blessing that would affect all the nations of the earth ,and the land of Canaan.

God would deliver his people from bondage through Moses. The Israelites, through faith, trusted in God. Other peoples on the Earth worshiped false gods and did not trust in God. The Israelites were the only ones to trust in God. That too would change, and his people would be scattered all over the Earth. Today His people are returning to the land that God had promised them, through their ancestors. Anyone who goes against Israel, the chosen people, God will go against.
