Keeping Your Home Safe While you Are Away

You’re excited about your trip; suitcases are zipped up, pets are in the kennels and travel documents are safely in your bag. So what’s left to worry about?
Unfortunately while you are away there is no way for you to protect your home completely, but there is plenty that you can do in order to keep it as safe as possible. The less you have to worry about it, the more you can relax on your trip.
Here are a few simple ways to keep your home safe while you are away:

Take out the big ticket items

We’re not suggesting you clear out your entire house, but it might be worth selecting a few high value items to place in self-storage if you know you’ll worry about someone taking them while you are away. Some self-storage companies offer a collection service and security seal your items in a storage unit in your presence before transporting them back to their secure site – an extremely hassle-free process, and you can’t really put a price on peace of mind.

Enlist friends and family to keep the property ‘active’

The more activity that goes on in your home while you are away, the less likely thieves are to notice the property has been vacated. See if friends and family will pop in for 10-15 minutes every day to check all is OK. That way you’ll know your property is being checked regularly on your behalf.

Get some cheap timers

It’s an age old trick but it still works! Get some timers for your lamps so that the lights go on and off when they normally would to give the appearance someone is in. If you have security lights with sensors ensure they work properly before you go. If you don’t have any, consider getting some as they are fairly cheap and very effective at scaring burglars away.

Put up some obstacles

We’re not suggesting you create a Home Alone style obstacle course for your burglars to tackle, but you could make it a bit more difficult for them to get into your property. For example; if you have a large gate blocking off entry to your back garden, ensure you don’t leave bins nearby for intruders to use to jump over the gate. If your gate is relatively short, consider making it higher with wire or anything else that would make it harder for them to jump it. You could also put locks low down on the interior of the gate.

Fake it

If you don’t have time to get a proper burglar alarm installed or don’t want to set one up because friends and family will be going round, get a fake one. They are incredibly cheap and are proven to deter burglars looking for a property to target.

Be smart

It’s easy to forget about the basics when you’re rushing around sorting out holiday plans, but you must remember not to leave any valuables in easy sight. This could be a large TV easily spotted through net curtains, or a laptop case near a window. It might sound basic but, it’s easily done when your mind is elsewhere. This is another reason putting valuable items into self-storage in advance is a good idea, because you’ll know they aren’t even at the property so you won’t have to worry about them at all.
