The knee is your body’s largest joint, which means there is a lot to know about knee anatomy. In fact, there are four different bones in this joint that are interconnected by a series of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is through this system of interconnectivity that you get the extremely stable joint that allows you to be active through walking, running, jumping, and other daily activity motions.

There is also a lot of padding in your knee joint, called cartilage. This cartilage helps cushion the bones in your knee joint, helps your knee move correctly, and is essential for properly distributing your weight across the joint, as well as up and down your leg, for proper balance. You don’t necessarily need a lot of cartilage in your knee to have it work, but you’ll be much more pain free if you do.

When it comes to knee anatomy, one of the easiest methods of maintaining a healthy knee is to just maintain a healthy weight. For every extra pound you carry, you are basically placing an extra five pounds of pressure and torque on your knee joint. That means if you are 100 pounds overweight, you are placing an extra 500 pounds of pressure on the joint. Along with regular exercise, eating foods that can help stimulate cartilage growth, like shellfish, can also help your knees start feeling better in no time flat.

So when it comes to knowing knee anatomy, knowing that the knee is the largest joint you have and that it withstands the most pressure allows you to realize that proper weight balance, a general routine of exercise, and diet that includes shellfish are the keys to maintaining a happy and healthy knee for years to come.
