The official Les Miserables soundtrack for the 2012 film which stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe will be released on December 2012. If you are familiar with the musical by Alain Boublil, Herbert Kretzmer and Claude-Michel Schonberg from which the musical drama film was based, then you know the songs and tunes associated with the whole production. For this new soundtrack however, the voices behind the songs will be those of Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and other members of the ensemble cast. There is also an original song written just for the film. It’s called Suddenly and it has already earned a nomination from the Satellite Awards in the Best Original Song category.
Some of the highlights of Les Miz are the performances by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway on the songs What Have I Done? and I Dreamed a Dream respectively. What’s even more impressive about soundtrack is that the actors did all the singing live. They sang live right in front of the camera. There were no overdubs and there was no lip-synching. The actors wore radio microphones that were hidden in their respective costumes and they sang to live piano accompaniment. The orchestration was added only when the filming was finished. The filmmakers believe that this is the first time in movie history that a musical film is able to pull off something like this.
The main cast of Les Miz spent over nine weeks in rehearsals preparing for their roles and songs. This speaks a lot about what’s been invested into the film’s music content. The cast worked with Joan Lader, the legendary vocal coach. Jackman lauded Lader saying that he wouldn’t have been able to play the part of Jean Valjean without the help of the vocal coach.
