Lose Weight with the Grapefruit Diet

If you are looking for a new way to lose weight you may want to try an old standby – theGrapefruit Diet. Although this diet has been around in different variations since the 1930s, it still hasn’t seemed to lose its popularity. One 2004 study conducted by Dr. Ken Fujiokaof Scripps Clinicfollowed100 overweight men and women for 12 weeks as they added either one-half grapefruit or an 8 ounce glass of sugar-free grapefruit juice to every meal. The participants ate their normal diet along with the grapefruit but did increase their exercise level. At the conclusion of the study, the participants who ae the one-half grapefruit averaged a weight loss of 3.6 pounds and the people who drank the grapefruit juice averaged a weight loss of 3.3 pounds. Some participants lost as much as 10 pounds.

Following the Grapefruit Diet

The good thing about the Grapefruit Diet is you don’t have to eat only one food or starve yourself for days to follow it and lose weight. Also, you don’t have to follow the original Grapefruit Diet to lose weight; you can simply add grapefruit or grapefruit juice to a healthy diet to enjoy its benefits.

The original Grapefruit Diet was basically a low-carb, low-calorie diet that promoted eating plenty of protein, fruits and vegetables and drinking a lot of water. A typical Grapefruit Dietmeal consists of some form of protein like fish, meat or eggs, a salad or fruit or vegetable (no starchy veggies like corn) and one-half grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit juice. This is eaten three times a day and one snack is allowed as well as one 8 ounce glass of skim milk. However, if you try this diet, be sure to eat at least 1,200 calories per day otherwise it is unhealthy for your body.

Losing Weight by Just Adding Grapefruit to Your Diet

As the above mentioned study shows, you can also lose weight just by adding one-half grapefruit or a serving of unsweetened grapefruit juice before every meal of your existing diet – as long as your diet is a healthy, balanced one. Also, adding exercise is recommended to assist in the weight loss.

Is the Grapefruit Diet Safe?

Following the low-calorie Grapefruit Diet is safe for a short period of time if you are healthy, do not go below 1,200 calories a day, do not take any prescription medications or are not at risk of developing type-2 diabetes. According to the Mayo Clinic, grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact negatively with certain prescription medications including ones for allergies, anxiety, depression and heart disease. Always ask your doctor before trying a diet, especially if you do have any health concerns.

The safest diet is one that includes a balance of protein, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Any diet that excludes any of these foods can place you at risk of health issues. For most people, however, simply adding a half grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice to each meal should be safe and has the potential of helping you lose a few extra pounds in the process.
