Choosing a Mailbox

Have you just moved to a new home and would like to change the existing mailbox? Or maybe you want to replace a tired old mailbox for a newer more secure one?

The first decision you have to make is wether you need a wall mounted mailbox or a post mounted one? This will be decided by the area you live in and what is acceptable to the mail carrier. Some of the mailboxes recommended here are USPS or Postmaster General approved.

I guess the next thing to think about is how much mail you receive and what size mailbox would be most useful. If you do a lot of shopping via the internet or catalogues you will need a mailbox capable of accepting and safely storing your parcels. Also, if you work away from home a lot, go on vacation or away for weekends you may find a large mailbox useful to save the hassle of having you’re mail held.

Security and Identity Theft

Sadly, something we all have to be wary of these days is security, vandalism and identity theft. To help to try and prevent this some mailboxes have hidden access door locks and others have anti-pry latch locking mechanisms to prevent leveraged entry.

Safety When Collecting The Mail

Kids love to help and get all exited by the thought of what the mailman might have delivered. So, if your little kids like to collect the mail for you then for safety’s sake you might want to consider a mailbox that opens at the rear. They can safely collect the mail and you needn’t worry about them getting too near to the traffic.

Protecting your mail from the weather

No one wants to open their mailbox to find damp, soggy deliveries, so make sure your mailbox has some weather protection. Choose a mailbox with a slot for papers and magazines, or one with doors with rubber seals to ensure all your deliveries are kept clean and dry.

Caring For Your Mailbox

If you like an easy life choose a mailbox that is maintenance free. These are normally made of heavy duty plastic and should only need an occasional quick wash. If this style of mailbox doesn’t appeal to you make sure to choose one that’s weatherproof and rust resistant to reduce the amount of maintenance.
