My Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Strategy for Making Money Writing Articles

For the past couple of days, I’ve been trying to educate myself about search engine optimization or SEO. I’ve read some extremely informative and well-written articles on the subjects (see particularly Susana S), as well as others that made my head spin. I’ve decided to stop reading at this point and use what I’ve learned to write some articles.

Informative Articles on Search Engine Optimization

Here is what I’ve read so far and what I’m going to do with the information to create my initial SEO strategy.

  • Web Content and What to Write About to Make Money. This article contains excellent information on how to generate ideas for topics to write about.
  • How to Increase PageRank and SERPs – SEO for Google Search. I’m using the nine-step, on-page optimization checklist included in this article to write one about creating crochet patterns. On the other hand, the author says the method she describes is now outdated but still useful (read the comments below the article for more SEO suggestions).
  • Find Long Tail Keywords with Google Wonder Wheel – Easy Tutorial. This is another extremely informative article on how to use long-tail keywords to generate online income and contains additional SEO information that helped me get a better understanding of the subject.
  • Google Keyword Tool Redefined. I REALLY liked this article because the author provides a simple and easy-to-implent SEO strategy that I’m going to run with. Read especially what he has to say about Cost-Per-Click or ‘CPC’ and Yahoo Search Assist.

These articles contain links to other articles that provide additional information, so be sure to check them out, too. I have several more articles to read, but at this point SEO information overload is starting to set in. It’s time to write.

My SEO Strategy

From the information in these articles, I’ve developed what I’m sure is a very rudimentary SEO strategy for getting traffic to my articles and hopefully lots of clicks so I can make millions of dollars in Google Adsense income (being sarcastic here!).

  1. Step 1: Find a topic to write about that contains information people are searching for..
  2. Step 2: Do keyword research to find high traffic keywords. CPC isn’t important, according to one author.
  3. Step 3: Assess the competition. This is hard, but includes consideration of other web site’s PageRanks and whether or not the keyword you want to use are included in the content of web sites with high SERPs. There’s software out there that will help you do this (e.g., Market samurai.
  4. Step 4: Do on-page optimization (includes writing quality content, keyword placement, and how to format content for the web)
  5. Step 5: Create backlinks to my articles.

Right now I’m focusing on steps 1, 2 and 4 primarily because it looks like step 2 will take some time to learn and I don’t have money right
now to purchase software that will do it for me. Backlinking (step 5) is also going to require more research. I’ll go back to studying these
topics once I get some writing done.

Confession Time

I did NOT use this strategy to write this article. My SEO strategy here as been more intuitve (i.e., I hope it gets some traffic!). Very often, I’ll get an idea to write about something and I run with it, a more ‘right-brain’ approach than the logical, left-brain process I’ve described above. Perhaps when I get some time, I’ll go back and optimize it (depending on how much traffic it gets).

In any event, I’ll track the results for this and the crochet article, using Google Adsense and Google Analytics for a month or two (or maybe less) and hopefully have some good news to report. If my results aren’t as good as I want them to be, then I’ll take note of what didn’t work and revise my SEO strategy accordingly. Wish me luck!
