What You Need To Know Before Buying The Nostalgia Electrics Cotton Candy Maker

Definitely get your hands on one because it’s a really fun product and there are many ways to experiment with flavors. But first, there are a few things you should know before buying this little machine:

What Works Well

The Nostalgia Electrics cotton candy maker creates delicate cotton candy out of not only traditional commercial candy floss, but also common table sugar, and an almost unlimited variety of hard candies. Good candy choices include:

  • Lifesavers* (fruit, Hawaiian Fruit, Fruiteria, butter rum) but not their Mints (they won’t fluff),
  • Werther’s Original & Chocolate Hard Candies,
  • Smarties,
  • Butterscotch,
  • Cinnamon Discs,
  • Peppermints,
  • Coffee (but not Nips),
  • Brach’s Soda Poppers, such as Root Beer, 7UP, Dr. Pepper, Orange Crush,**
  • GOLD MEDAL cotton candy powder (available at

* They come in many flavors such as white pineapple flavored cotton candy, butter rum and tropical flavors, banana, pina colada, etc. You’ll achieve the fluffy consistency you get from sugar with the smoother operation. Some people like their starlite mints so you can experiment to see whether they are the right choice for you, too.

** These work great, but use only one candy cut in half or it won’t fluff right.

Special tips:

Keep in mind that your cotton candy will be fluffier with sugar-based candy. Sugar-free candy will work, too but you should avoid candies that have too many non-sugar ingredients. For example, heavy creams or peanut butter won’t fluff.

The size of the candy

Some floss balls may turn out to be too small depending on the size of the candies. For example, two Lifesavers have far less mass than two butterscotch or striped peppermint candies. Don’t use more than two pieces of candy or cut the candy into halves. Put one piece of candy on one side of the spinner.

What WON’T Work

Round hard candy such as sour balls, soft and creamy candies, Jolly Ranchers, Skittles, Lemonheads or Boston Baked Beans, Hot Tamales or Ike & Mikes, Citrus Slices or Starburst, Truvia, gummy candies do NOT work with this machine. Also, anything with starch will cause it to gum up.

What Does Diet Have With Cotton Candy?

The Nostalgia Electrics Cotton Candy Maker is not advertised as a diet type system, but it works great as one. With the help of this cotton candy maker you can also enjoy gluten-free treats and candies with low sugar and low calorie. Eating a huge puff of cotton candy will be much better than eating two pieces of hard candy. You’ll feel great knowing how little calories your kids consume (about 20 with two candies) and they’ll feel great thinking they are having the best treat ever!

The Cones

The two plastic cones that come with the candy maker won’t be enough to make as much candy floss as you’d like so don’t forget to order some more. For those who like to experiment, thin 12′ long wooden dowel rods could do the trick (you can get them at craft stores at an affordable price). I would recommend purchasing the Hard & Sugar Free Cotton Candy Kit with the Nostalgia Electrics Candy Maker because it comes with 24 cones and an assortment of sugar-free and fruit flavored candies to use, which is more than enough for a good start.

Before you make your first batch, watch some clips on making cotton candy on youtube. There is a certain technique to it but once you get the hang of it it’s very easy.

Clean Up

Clean up is a child’s play. The metal spinner part and the plastic bowl come off, then you just soak them in hot water for a few minutes and the sugar dissolves.

What’s Inside the Box

Inside the box you’ll find the unit with power cord and two plastic reusable cones.
Don’t forget that you’ll also need additional things: sugar floss and extra cones.

Don’t expect a high capacity machine you see at carnivals, but the Nostalgia Electrics Candy Maker is worth every penny; it’s easy to use and it gives you the opportunity to have fun with a great family activity. And, most important, it will make great cotton candy.
