Permanent Hair Color at Home

Permanent hair color at home can be a messy and sometimes scary undertaking, especially if you’re not quite sure how to correctly apply permanent hair color at home. Another problem is not knowing how it will turn out, since hair color correction can be very difficult. In fact, you may end up in a salon paying way more than you would if you would have went to the salon in the first place.

The only way to know what the finished color will look like is to do a strand test. A strand test can be done in an area underneath that nobody can see. That is, if you have long enough hair. Those with short hair can’t safely do a strand test that can’t be seen. This is one reason why it’s a good idea to stick with a permanent hair color that is as close to your own hair color as possible.

If you’re considering permanent hair color at home it is not a good idea to go lighter unless you know what you’re doing. The reason for this is that to lighten your natural hair color you have to take color out and there is a good chance that the color will turn out brassy. Brassy means the hair has this yellow orange tint that we all know and hate and try our best to avoid at all costs.

There are a few ways to get rid of brassy hair. The easiest one is to cover up brassy hair color with a darker color. The second choice is to add high or low lights to create a dimensional color effect. Third, and scariest, is to apply hair bleach and lighten to desired blonde shade and finish with a toner. The third option should be done by a professional hairstylist as it can go bad really fast.

Keep in mind, when you go with a lighter hair color that the upkeep is huge, because dark roots appear in 3-4 weeks. Highlight upkeep is 3-6 months depending on how heavy the highlight is and how dark your natural hair color is. When the hair color is close to your own, depending on length of hair, upkeep is 2-4 months.

Before you do permanent hair color at home you should know the upkeep, so that you will know how often the color needs to be done.

Lastly, you need to know how to apply permanent hair color properly and be knowledgeable about hair color preparation and precautions BEFORE you color. This way when you do permanent hair color at home it has a chance of being a success instead of a disaster.
