PRIVACY: Windows 10 phone too much home

Questionable preferences: If you want to contain in Windows 10, the transmission of user data to the Microsoft server needs to be active in many places.

Microsoft gets a lot of praise from the specialized press and much scolding of privacy activists for Windows 10. “Windows 10 spied you out,” it says, of “disturbing preferences” is mentioned. What is meant is that Microsoft has chosen the opt-out rather than opt-in principle: who does not want something, it must deactivate itself.

Some settings are indeed questionable, even if something like that can be found in other operating systems. Other settings are understandable from the perspective of Microsoft, because an application such as the virtual assistant Cortana after all one of the biggest new features of Windows 10 and many users need data in order to be of real help can.

After Windows 10 has various ways to customize the data protection and privacy settings. We list the most important at this point to explain what lies behind the sometimes flowery descriptions and what should change default user better if they want to send as few data to Microsoft and third parties.

It should first be noted that Microsoft gives users already during the initial installation of Windows 10, the possibility of changing certain default settings – it encourages users but not just them. Instead, Microsoft suggests that you use the Express settings. Who is watching this and instead “Customize settings” clicks, can already disable functions first. All others should go through the most important privacy settings after installation. They can be found at:

Here you can see first four settings. All four are enabled by default. Already the top slider obscures more than it explains: “Apps that use the Mailer ID for App overarching experiences permit” is there. Experiences? Please what should be experiences? And what is the Mailer ID?

Explanation: When setting up a user account created Windows 10 an ID for targeted advertising. They will be linked to that email address, which is also used for app downloads and various Microsoft programs. This makes it possible Microsoft, across applications – including Web browsing – to personalize ads. The Company believes this is an “experience”. Who does not want that even tailored advertising appear in third-party apps, the first slider has therefore to off.

It is also advisable, here the link Microsoft Advertising and other personalization information manage to click. On the website, users can specify that they want to see in the Edge-browser and when using your Microsoft account, not personalized advertising.

The third controller determines whether one “information on writing behavior of Microsoft Message” wants “to improve the input and write functions in the future.” What exactly Microsoft here meant by “information” and how these are rendered anonymous, is unclear.

Settings – Privacy – Position

The location determination – Microsoft calls them position recognition – is also enabled by default. Microsoft has created its own FAQ to from but not clear how this data is actually collected. Should be meant the GPS positioning (if the device has a GPS module) and the location determination using the IP address.

Microsoft calls in the FAQ also several cases in which location data are also collected when the controller position detection is set to Off. Thus classic Windows apps and services from third parties, which is sent out of your account, continue to access location data. Features like Find my Device can also, as long as they are active. In addition, Microsoft writes: “Apps can use other technologies such as Bluetooth or wireless LAN scanning to determine the location of your device, even if the Windows-location service is disabled in your machine.”

Taken together, this means, at worst: It is difficult to impossible to prevent Windows 10 detects location data, as long as you use the Internet or the wireless LAN and Bluetooth adapter has activated.
