OK. So many of us have that bit of jiggle around the belly we’d like to get rid of, and we’ve all seen those ads about losing the belly fat. But, nothing is as easy as those ads make it seem. There ARE ways to lose belly fat, and you don’t have to pay some staranger to read about them on their website. Lets talk about a few of the best ways to lose belly fat that are effective and safe for you.
First, lets talk about why belly fat is different than fat on other parts of our bodies. Belly fat is what is known as ‘Visceral Fat.’ Visceral fat is deep inside your waistline, tucked around your organs and bones and is more metabolically active than the fat in other areas of your body, known as subcutaneous fat. Because it is more metabolically active, it is often the first weight we shed when on a diet or excercize regimen. This is good, as it means you have an easier time losing belly fat than the fat arond your arms, legs or behind. There are certain foods that can help you to shed that unwanted belly fat, lets talk about a few of them.
Whole grains. Yeah, I know we all know whole grains are healthy. But a recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that obese subjects who switched to a whole grain diet lost more belly fat than another group who ate the same foods but with refined grains instead. The reason? Eating whole grains changes your bodies insulin response, and makes it easier for your body to access those stored visceral fats. That means it can burn the stored belly fat instead of leaving it to sit around. Now eating whole grains doesn’t mean you have to eat twigs and berries. You can do it gradual steps. Many companies now are offering cerals, breads and pastas that are whole grain and taste pretty much the same as what you are used to. Its a painless switch that could make a big difference!
Another good switch is giving up unhealthy fats for monounsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats, like those found in olive oil, almonds, and avocados, can be good for you. They help you to feel full longer, reducing your cravings for less healthy foods. And help to keep your cholesterol in check too. But don’t go on a guacamole binge – were talking about adding a handful of almonds a day here or switching your vegetable oil for olive oil.
Another versitile food is eggs. We’ve been hearing for years that eggs are bad and we should limit them, but resarch finds that eggs have lots of B12. We need B12 to metabolize fats. When we don’t get enough, we tend to hold on to the stored fat in our bodies, especially belly fat. And eggs don’t have to be unhealthy! Just adding a poached or hardboiled egg to your diet a couple of times a week can make a big difference. Check with your doctor first if your cholseterol is high though.
Last, but not least, get active! You know that there is no miracle cure for losing belly fat that includes eating ice cream and laying on the couch. But you don’t have to become a gym rat either. Just adding 20 minutes of activity to your day can make a big difference. Take a walk, go for a swim, anything! Just being more active gets your metabolisim revved up and as an added bonus, it realeases endorphins that make you feel good too!
Good luck, I hope you have found this information helpful!
