Many people dream of becoming entrepreneurs. They want to be their own boss, set their own hours, and grow their business from nothing to something. The pipe dream fades away after being in business for just a few weeks. They realize that it’s a lot harder than they realized. The hardest part of running a business is a simple, yet not so simple answer.

Managing Employees

As a business grows it will become more work than any one person can handle. Rather than spend countless sleepless nights trying to accomplish everything, a smart business owner will hire some high quality employees. These employees will know their job and help the company to succeed far beyond the business owner’s dreams. Managing them can be difficult, especially for the new business owner. This is not the hardest part of running a business.

Bringing in New Clients

Without clients any business will go belly up in no time. While there are some businesses that stick around for quite a while relying on just a few big clients, there is always the need to find new clients. In the every changing business world, new clients are often not easy to find. The business owner himself must become a great salesman, or hire a great salesman. Finding new clients is not the hardest part of running a business.

Wearing a Hundred Hats

Many new business owners try to do all of the jobs themselves. They try to be the owner, the operator, the IT specialist, the salesperson, the HR director, the payroll clerk, and much more. These people end up doing too much, and the smarter ones will outsource some of that labor. They will hire a payroll services company to make take away that burden. They will hire an IT guy to make sure their computers are running properly. Even those business owners who do it all themselves find that wearing a hundred hats is not the hardest part of running a business.

The Hardest Part of Running a Business

There are difficult aspects about being a business owner. There are bumps along the road, hurdles to get over, and problems to solve. The hardest part of running a business is the fact that there are no sure things. There is no recipe for running a successful business, and every decision you make will require ingenuity and customization to your business. The hardest part of running a business is that there are no easy answers to the hard parts of running a business.

If you are able to think quickly, make important decisions, and persevere, you have what it takes to be a business owner. If you would rather know that you can show up at 9 and leave at 5 and you will have a steady paycheck, then you probably don’t have what it takes to be a business owner.
