Safelink Wireless Program: Free Cell Phone and Free Minutes

-

Most people have no idea about the Safelink Wireless Program, which offers a free cell phone and free minutes to a variety of different types of people from seniors on social security to even working people who have incomes at or below 135% of the federal poverty level, these are just few of just ONE of the requirements you must meet in order to qualify for a free cell phone with free minutes.

And let’s be very honest, cell phone service isn’t cheap. Did you know the average person pays about $50 dollars a month or more just purely for basic cell phone services?

And of course the more features you have on your cell phone, the more the average user ends up paying monthly. The good thing is that there are programs, like the Safelink Wireless Program, which allows you to get a free wireless phone if you need one and 250 free cell phone minutes.

This program was actually developed under the Reagan Administration under the Lifeline Program. It mandated that wireless and landline companies were required to set up a Universal Fund which allowed for low income people to be able to have access to telephony devices, at the time simply landline for free. Today, as wireless phone devices outnumber landline phones, most are even more interested to find out if they qualify.

It’s important to know though that these telephones aren’t constitutional rights. You must meet just ONE of the requirements typically set up by your state. They are income, federal or state related.

The Qualifications for the Safelink Wireless Program:

To be considered for a free wireless phone you must qualify under your state’s guidelines. These guidelines typically include meeting just ONE of the below:

  • National School Lunch’s Free Lunch Program
  • Medicaid
  • Section 8 Federal Public Housing Assistance Program (FPHA)
  • Food Stamps
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Plan (LIHEAP)
  • Income at or below the 135% federal poverty level (required proof needed)

You should also keep in mind that under this program you must re-certify every year. Meaning this free wireless phone program is only good for one year. The idea is that this phone subsidy is just temporary help. And we all need help at times to make it.

Additionally you should also be aware of the fact that this phone program ONLY allows for voice and text. That means that internet is not included. But under many programs like the Safelink Wireless one, you are able to add to your voice minutes and text minutes for a nominal fee should you need more.

Here is what is included in the Free Cell Phone and Free Minutes Program:

  • A Free Cell Phone
  • 250 Free Minutes
  • Free Customer Service 611 Calls
  • Free Emergency Calls
  • 3 Way Calling
  • Call Waiting

What isn’t included are free international calls or calls to directory assistance. Also be aware that there are a host of other free cell phone providers, which include: Assurance, Tag Mobile, Standup Wireless, Reachout Wireless and Yourtel Wireless.

You should know that when it comes to free cell phones for low income people, you have many choices, the Safelink Wireless Program is just one.
